Decrease Repetitive Behaviors in Children With Autism
Children with autism are prone to repetitive movements. This is due to the need to expel excess energy and can be distracting and distracting. With a few simple changes, these behaviors can be reduced.
In children with autism, the expelled energy manifests itself as flapping the hands, walking in circles, banging the head or jumping up and down. Also any fixation on a particular task, such as twirling a string between two fingers or “flying” the hand in front of the face.
Repetitive movements are not unusual. When people are nervous or excited, they tend to drum their fingers or tap their feet to release some of that extra pent-up energy. Although repetitive movements, other than head banging, are not a safety risk to the child or others, they interfere with the child’s ability to learn or participate in other activities. The more a child focuses on repeating the same task, the less attention or brainpower he has available for other things.
So how do you get a child to calm down, sit down and pay attention without distractions?
Although an autistic child will never be completely free of repetitive behaviors, here are some tips and tricks to reduce them.
1.) Provide a starting point for movement, such as swinging, jumping on a trampoline or a lap around the track.
2.) Use chewing tubes. These allow the child to sit still, but by biting out excess energy.
3.) Create a reward system for not doing the unwanted activity. For example, if the child does not kick the wall for five minutes, he gets a treat. Then increase the time to ten minutes and so on until the unwanted behavior is gone.
4.) Replace bad behavior with good behavior. For example, instead of rolling paper between your fingers, guide the child to build with blocks.
This does not prevent the behavior, but by getting the child into another activity, he becomes more alert and socially functional.
