Declutter Your Bathroom in 8 Easy Steps

The most hated room in our home to clean or clean is the bathroom. Once you have some ideas of what to do and a plan, it really isn’t that hard to do, and it really shouldn’t take that long. In most homes, the mere mention of cleaning the bathroom is the most dreaded chore in the household.

If you have promised or challenged yourself to clean your home, the bathroom also needs to be done. So get down to business, do that first and complete the task and mark it off your list as “done”.

Now there are 8 easy steps to clean your bathroom:

1. Empty the medicine cabinet of all medicines. Check expiration dates and properly dispose of all old and expired ones. Check with your local pharmacy or hospital to see if they have a program to accept expired medications for disposal. Health authorities have advised that flushing medicines down the toilet is not the correct way to dispose of them. Also, be sure to remove and tear off any labels with names, addresses, and personal information on the bottles. If you have children in the house, make sure the medicines you keep have child-resistant caps.

2. Remove all other items from your medicine cabinet. You’ll be surprised what you can find there. Sort and decide what to keep and what to throw away. If it’s an over-the-counter medicine or cream, check how to properly dispose of it. Take the necessary precautions with over-the-counter medications if you have children at home.

3. Drag everything under the sink and start sorting. If you have duplicates of things like shampoo, conditioner, hand creams, and liquid soap, combine them into one bottle or container and dispose of the empty containers. Small plastic containers or boxes are a great way to keep these items in one place.

4. First aid supplies. Go through and make sure you have all the supplies in a basic first aid kit. antiseptics, gauze pads, scissors, tape, Ace bandage, quick cold pack, latex gloves, Band-Aids, tweezers and sting and bite treatments. If any of these parts are missing from the first aid kit, replace them. Keep them all together in the same container or buy a first aid kit with the necessary items already supplied.

5. Make-up and cosmetics. It’s a good idea to go through your makeup and cosmetics at least every 6 months and throw away what you haven’t used in that time. In particular, mascara should be changed every few months to prevent eye infections.

6. Perfumes and cologne. They have a shelf life of 3-5 years if stored correctly and should be thrown away if you notice a different smell. Although perfumes and colognes do not “spoil” the older they are, the smell and color change.

7. Bed linen and towels. Sort all sheets and pillowcases, bath towels, hand towels and washcloths. Match all the sheets and pillowcases together and get rid of the ones that don’t match. Do the same with towels and washcloths. You may not have these matches or sets, but go through and check for wear and holes and throw them away. If any of the items are still in good condition, donate them to a shelter or flea market.

8. Hair accessories. If you haven’t been able to resist buying every new hair tie, clips, bows, ribbons, or even a hair dryer or curling iron, you need to get it under control. Decide which items you use the most and which you have never used or probably never will, and throw them away. Again, if they are usable and in good condition, Donate them.
