Sturgis Mustang Rally

We started going to the Sturgis Mustang Rally in 2007 and haven’t missed a year since. As some rallies go, it’s not the oldest, but it’s certainly one of the best, if not the best, rally in the country. This year the rally starts on September 1st and lasts until September 5th.

I’m just guessing in round numbers, but I think in 2007 last year (2010) there were about 500-600 cars, I think it was more like 1000 cars. I’ve been to a lot of car shows and rallies in my time and I have to say this is one of the best organized events I’ve ever attended. Well attended and well organized from check in to last dinner. Most people have heard of Sturgis because of bike week, which is just two weeks earlier. A lot of people have asked me how it compares to Bike Week, and all I tell them is that it’s like Bike Week, except there are no fights, no gangs, not nearly as many drunks and no shirtless girls. So it’s very family friendly in most cases. We’ve been getting into the bar for the past two years and they have a lot of drinking games, but for the most part everyone is very well behaved.

I noticed that this year the registration is in the Thunderdome, in previous years it was held downtown. I also noticed that they have added a burnout tournament that will be at the Thunderdome on Friday 6-9. I think I’ll throw some old tires on my trailer before I head out this year.

The highlight of the rally for me is the poker run tour. They guide us through the most beautiful areas of the country. I’ll warn you, it’s pretty long, I forget how far it was last year, but I want to say over 100 miles. But they made great stops, I wish I remembered the name of the little gas station gift shop. It’s out in the middle of nowhere, but tons of fun.

I’m not much of a gambler, but it’s fun to go up to Deadwood in the evenings and put a few pennies in the slots (I won $250.00 last year though). The casinos are clean and nice and the town is fun just to walk around.

They have an autocross that runs several times a weekend, looks like a lot of fun, but to be honest, I’m beyond anal working my car that hard. Saturday night they open the 1/8 mile drag strip and let you run it. We haven’t done it in the past, but if everything goes well, we’ll try this year.

The rally is becoming more and more popular, so it is very important to book your accommodation early! This time we made ours almost a year earlier. If you try to wait until the last minute, you’ll end up camping.

In short, as a Mustang fanatic, I highly recommend going to Sturgis! Book early, hit the poker run, take the kids, buy 50 bucks to blow the slot machines, and do the barge (but don’t plan on beating him at beer pong).
