Your Best Coaching – Give Only What’s Helpful

When I was 15, I gave my grandmother a plaque I made for her that read: “We are what we make ourselves.” When I was 22, I wanted to start a company called The Listening Post. Then I didn’t start that business because I didn’t think anyone would believe that a 22-year-old wanted to listen to them.

Fast forward 15 years to 1997, when I heard about a new business: life coaching and business coaching. And oh, to find out that the primary goal of coaching was to help people become who they wanted to be. And one of the most important skills involved: listening. Wow!

By then I had started, managed and successfully made a living from three businesses I created from scratch: a singles newsletter; a service for creating newsletters for dentists to send to their patients; and graphic design and writing where I developed logos, company names, brochures, business cards and newsletters for speakers, trainers, consultants, psychotherapists and massage therapists.

While growing these companies, I got to know my strengths, skills and interests and continued to develop them. I also instinctively knew how important it was to find out what my potential customers need most.

I then offered them whatever products and/or services lived at the intersection of their wants, interests and needs and my strengths, skills and interests. This has not only been an effective, but also a personally satisfying way to develop a business. My clients have gotten from me what they wanted and needed the most when I do what I do best and what I love!

I’ve never had formal coaching training. I grew my coaching business by learning from the coaches hired by my coaches and by offering marketing coaching to my speaking and consulting clients in addition to my design and writing services.

I grew my coaching business as I had grown all my businesses before: by offering coaching, consulting and teaching at the intersection of my clients’ wishes, interests and needs and my strengths, skills and interests.

Over the years, many of my clients have been coaches who have been trained in various coaching programs. I’ve often found myself in a situation where I’ve taught my clients to trust their own instincts when they’ve become suspicious of offering their clients anything other than the “pure coaching” that coach training programs and the coaching industry so vociferously advocate. the right way to coach and grow a coaching company.

“Coaching is not consulting. Coaching is not therapy. Coaching is not giving advice. Coaching does not offer resources because the client is resourceful and holistic.” That’s what the coaching industry says.

All of these ideas come from the ego of the coaching industry, which seeks to create coaching as completely separate and apart from all other professions related to personal and professional growth and change.

Although the concept of coaching as separate and distinct from all other professions may be to some extent necessary for coaching to mature into an established profession, it does not serve the coach and it certainly does not serve the coach’s client! And that’s not entirely true.

A pure coaching process is different from a pure consulting process, a pure psychotherapy process, a pure training process, a pure counseling process, and so on… However, long before coaching was called coaching, some of the best consultants were offering their clients pure coaching. sometimes. And some of the most effective and successful psychiatrists, psychotherapists, and counselors would sometimes use pure coaching if it would best bring about healing for the client.

And so it is with some of the best coaches today. Drawing on all of their strengths, interests, and skills, an exceptional coach can provide pure coaching, a timely resource, a moment of grief counseling, stand-up comedy, and a teaching story all in one session! And many of their clients work with them year after year and refer one person after another.

The remaining 80% of coaches suffer. Frustrated that they can’t get or keep clients, they wonder why most potential clients don’t understand or want pure coaching. Especially after doing as they were taught in coach training, detailing on their website and in their conversations the differences between coaching and seven or eight overlapping professions…

Although not necessarily accepted by the coaching industry, a coach who provides the client’s needs that the coach wants to provide is the coach who has the best job in the world and makes a good living. And when a coach’s clients’ lives and businesses change, clients are thrilled that they were lucky enough to hire a coach!

Are you ready to trust your own instincts and serve the customer in front of you with everything you have to offer?
