How to Use Bentonite Clay

One summer day a few years ago, my wife Vida and I were sitting in the kitchen when we heard one of those piercing screams that sends adrenal spikes into a parent’s heart. Our son Max, who was 8 at the time, picked up a rock and was stung by a scorpion. I knew our central Texas scorpions weren’t lethal, but I also knew Max was allergic to ant stings and I was afraid the much stronger toxins in scorpion stings would wreak havoc on his body.

Once we discovered the source of the pain, Vida and I had two completely different reactions. I ran for the phone to call poison control and she ran into the bathroom and grabbed a Tupperware bin of bentonite clay mixed with water, which she occasionally used as a beauty mask. Meanwhile, our son’s deathly scream shook the chandeliers. By the time I found the poison control number and was about to dial, a strange thing happened. Silence. I walked out into the living room and my son’s face was still oscillating white and red from the lack of oxygen from all the screaming and he was staring open mouthed at the wet mud on top of his hand. He seemed shocked that the pain was gone.

“What the hell is that?” I had a question.

“It’s clay,” Vida told me. “I read that it was good against insect bites.”

So that was my introduction to calcium bentonite clay. The clay paste seemed to draw the toxins out of the shallow puncture wounds and relieve Max’s pain within seconds. Otherwise she was fine and the swelling went down about 30 minutes after the paste was removed.

As it turns out, we literally live 15 minutes from Perry Aldridge, author, motivational and keynote speaker, and founder of The Living Clay Company. His book, Living Clay, is the seminal work on the subject, and Perry A himself has access to a calcium bentonite mine that produces the finest calcium bentonite clay in the world. The following information on the benefits of bentonite clay is sourced from this book.

Bentonite clay, sometimes called “montmorillonite,” refers to the edible bentonite clay that belongs to the smectite family of clays. These clays were formed from volcanic activity millions of years ago.

Many sodium-based clays are marketed as edible bentonite clays, but must be mixed with an acidic beverage before consumption to offset the high sodium content. Our body does not tolerate large amounts of sodium, so the amount of sodium-based clay that can be consumed per day is limited to a small amount. In the case of pure calcium bentonite clay, there are no such restrictions on consumption.

As Perry A says in his book Living Clay, “Sodium-based clays are used primarily for industrial purposes, including: drilling mud; cat litter; plaster; matches; cement tiles; grease; house paints; copy paper; dynamite; shoe polish; concrete; crayons; and bleaching agents. Calcium based clays are called “living” clays, as they consist primarily of minerals that contribute to the production of enzymes in all living organisms.

Calcium bentonite clay is a clay that is consumed by humans, animals and plants and can be incorporated into the soil, so be careful when purchasing potable clay and check the labels. The best calcium bentonite clay is clean with a very fine mesh.

People have used healing clay both externally and internally to heal disease, sustain life, and promote general health and well-being.

Calcium bentonite clay is both an “adsorption” and an “absorption” agent.

The difference between the two words is fundamental to understanding how bentonite clay minerals work and how healing clay works.

In his book Living Clay, Perry explains, “Adsorption describes the process by which charged particles from other materials combine with charged particles on the outer surface of the clay molecule. Bentonite clay molecules carry a negative electrical charge, while toxins, bacteria, viruses, parasites and other impurities carry a positive charge. When the clay enters the human body, the positively charged toxins are attracted to the negatively charged surfaces of the clay molecule. The clay molecules act like magnets, attracting and holding the toxins and impurities to the surface, and removing them when the clay is removed or expelled, so it is important , to drink a lot of water after swallowing live clay to help expel the now toxic clay.

Absorption is a slower and more complex process. The bentonite clay molecule absorbs other materials into its internal structure like a sponge. The inner layers of absorbent clays contain filling. This means that charged ions sit between the layers of the clay molecule surrounded by water molecules. The clay expands as foreign materials are absorbed and fill the spaces between the stacked layers of clay molecules. Absorbent clay absorbs positively charged toxins and impurities and ignores negatively charged nutrients. Calcium bentonite clay is by far the most effective clay with the strongest traction.”

As it turns out, bentonite clay has many more uses than just a paste against scorpion and insect bites. Every year I travel overseas to Southeast Asia. I never travel without my clay, and I no longer suffer from traveler’s diarrhea, dysentery, or any of the other myriad ailments I’ve been forever contracting while traveling. A few ounces mixed with water before bed followed by a glass of water and this stuff just works for me.

Most people giggle when I tell them I eat dirt and have no idea I’m even brushing my teeth with it. But you know what? OK. Our family budget for medical expenses includes only zeros.
