Here I Am – Three Very Simple Words – But They Can Mean So Much When Sincerely Spoken
I’M HERE. Three simple words – “I am here” – and it means – I am available – I am available to listen – I am available and willing to hear what you have to say to me – and what YOU have to say to me.
When we say those words, we never know where they will lead – or what the consequences will be – yes, even in 2021.
What do we do when we hear God’s voice – when we know that God is speaking to me – doing something to get my attention – take hold of my life – and my talents and gifts?
What happens when I say to God, “I am here”?
1 – I may make a sacrifice that I never thought I could make. This might not be the best way to start your message – maybe you should start with a blessing – but it is a blessing! Look at Abraham again – Not long after, God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “I’m here,” he replied. Then God said: “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains that I will talk about.” Genesis 22 verses 1 and 2.
God does not test us to qualify us – but to grow us – and develop us.
Matthew 10 verse 39 – Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. This is the principle of the cross. I give up something to get something much better. GOD gives back in ways we can never imagine – but it starts with sacrifice.
Jacob gave up his plans – Joseph gave up his dreams – Moses gave up Pharaoh’s palaces – David gave up his desire to build God’s temple – Matthew gave up his job as a tax collector – Peter gave up his nets – Paul gave up his church religion – Mary gave up her son. They all gave something—they all knew something about sacrifice—and then God gives something back.
We couldn’t miss the sacrificial part – No! We give up control, and God takes control—and God does something.
Romans 12 verse 1 – I ask you, brothers, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, in view of God’s mercy – this is your spiritual worship.
2 – “I’m here” means I’m facing a fear I thought I could never face.
JACOB – He wrestled with God – his name means “doer” – but then God gives him a new name – Israel.
And God spoke to Israel in a night vision and said, “Jacob! Jacob!” “I’m here,” he replied. “I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will surely bring you back.” Genesis 46 verse 2-4.
It was the one place he should never have gone!
What is the one thing I would never want to do? Where is the place I never want to go?
3 – “Here I am” – I see a miracle that I thought I would never see otherwise.
Moses – When the LORD saw that he went over to look, God called out to him from inside the bush: “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” “Come no nearer,” said God. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.” Exodus 3 verse 4
40 years in Pharaoh’s palace – 40 years in the wilderness tending sheep.
MOSES asks 4 questions – Who am I? Who are you? What will happen to them? How about that? Is this the problem – my weakness – the struggle?
Remember and think about the miracles that Moses saw over the years.
4 – “I’m here” – I hear a message I never thought I’d hear.
1 Samuel 3 verse 4 – Samuel – Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, “Here I am.” When GOD speaks to you, it may sound like someone else—or someone else—than you.
God’s voice – God’s call – can confound your plans – and your hopes – and your ambitions.
5 – “I’m Here” – I’m going to a place I never thought I’d go.
Isaiah 6, verse 8 – Isaiah has this vision – he hears this voice – Then I heard the voice of the Lord who said: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” So I said, “Here I am. Send me!”
We tend to say, “That’s a good question – I’ll consider that question – I’ll ask it at some point. I’ll get someone to consult with me about it.”
That is not what God does – God does not need to consult – He needs obedient servants.
6 – “I’m here” – I trust a promise I never thought I could trust.
Luke 1 v35, 37 and 38 – take Mary.
The angel answered: “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Thus the saint to be born will be called the Son of God. For with God nothing is impossible.” “I am the servant of the Lord,” replied Mary. “Let it be to me as you have said.”
This is the promise of the virgin birth – Mary is about 14 or 15 years old – Joseph’s betrothed. The words are slightly different from “I’m here” – but the feeling is the same.
Some may believe that they are too guilty and therefore unworthy, others may believe that they have failed, made too many mistakes, or have too many faults.
“I am a failure – I always have been a failure – I will never be anything – and I will never make anything of my life.”
This is no longer true when we say to God “I am here” when God calls.
7 – I serve a person I never thought I could serve.
Acts 9 verses 10 and 11 – Ananias Jesus had a follower named Ananias in Damascus. The Lord spoke to Ananias in a vision: “Ananias!”
Ananias answered, “Here I am, Lord.” The Lord said to him: Get up and go to Straight Street, find the house of Judas and ask for a man named Saul from the city of Tarsus.
At that time, Ananias did not know the end of the story – we do. Ananias gets involved right at the beginning of Saul’s Christian life. Ananias had to face Saul of Tarsus—and serve Saul of Tarsus. Saul was healed – and Saul was baptized – because Ananias went and ministered.
8 – I find a JOY I never thought I would find – JESUS.
In fact, Jesus is the one who finds us – people may say at the beginning that they have found God or that they have found Jesus – but in a short time they will realize that it is Jesus who has found us – and He is calling. This is what the resurrection is about – it can come into any church – through the Holy Spirit into any life.
Verse 20 of Revelation 3 is about Jesus wanting to enter the Church – to be admitted to His Church! “Here I am! I am standing at the door and knocking. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in and eat with you, and you will eat with me.”
I am available – I am willing to listen – I and I am willing to serve – I am willing to trust – I am willing to go.
“I am here” – I am willing to sacrifice – I have the strength and courage to face my fears.
“Here I am” – ready to see miracles – and to hear a message I never thought I would hear – and to go and do what I never thought I could do.
“Here I am” – ready to trust God’s promises – and maybe serve someone I thought I would never serve – and enjoy the Joy that is in Jesus Christ and all the other blessings of GOD.
January 2021 – “Here I am” – when God calls – when Jesus decides – it is because there is a very real need – and He wants you to be a part of His plan and purpose.
Please answer carefully.
