Genesis 22:1-19
“1 And it came to pass after this, that God tempted Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham, and said, Behold, here I am.

2 And he said: Take now your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah; and sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I am telling you.

3 Abraham got up early in the morning, saddled his donkey, and took his two young men and his son Isaac with him, and he split the wood for the burnt offering, and he got up and went to the place where God had told him.

4 And on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place afar off.

5 And Abraham said to his young men: Stay here with the donkey; and I and the boy will go there and pray and return to you.

6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and put it on Isaac, his son. and he took fire and a knife in his hand; and they both went together.

7 And Isaac spoke to Abraham, his father, and said: My father! And he said: Here I am, my son. And he said: Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the burnt offering?

8 And Abraham said: My son, God will provide for himself a lamb as a burnt offering; therefore they both left together.

9 And they came to the place which God had told him; And Abraham built an altar there and put the wood in order, and he bound Isaac his son and placed him on the wood on the altar.

10 And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to kill his son.

11 And the angel of the LORD called to him from heaven and said: Abraham, Abraham, and he said: Here I am.

12 And he said: Do not lay your hand on the boy and do nothing with him, for now I know that you fear God, since you did not deny me your son, your only son.

13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught by the horns in the thicket, and Abraham went and took the ram and sacrificed him as a burnt offering instead of his son.

14 And Abraham called that place Jehovah-ji’reh, as they say to this day: The Lord is seen on the mountain.

15 And the angel of the LORD called out to Abraham from heaven a second time,

16 and he said: I have sworn by myself, says the Lord, because you have done this and have not denied your son, your only son,

17 That I will bless you with blessings and multiply your seed like the stars of the sky and like the sand on the seashore. and thy seed shall possess the gates of his enemies;

18 And in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed; because you listened to my voice.

19 So he returned to Abraham’s servants, and they arose and went together to Beersheba; Abraham lived in Beersheba.

Background
Abraham lived in a time of peace. Ishmael and Hagar were cast out. They made an agreement with the local king. Isaac grew up – he was about 20 years old at the time.

A new test – a complete contradiction to God’s previous promise (Genesis 21:1-6, 12b).

God tests Abraham to see if he loves him more than anything else. Abraham’s faith is clear as he willingly obeys God when God commands him.

Genesis 22: Although he must kill Isaac with his own hand, he nevertheless has no doubt that the promise will be fulfilled.

He has no more of the promise than he had before Isaac.

The next morning he sets out, not sharing his terrible command from the Lord.

Verse 4. A specific location was designated on Mount Moriah, about 10 miles from Beersheba – a 3 day journey. A donkey brought the wood and the food. Moria means: Worship of God.

Abraham did not raise questions, seek delay, or argue. He got up early. He had to find the tree, cut it down and put it on the donkey to burn his son. We can imagine the hardships his heart went through preparing for the journey. After receiving the command, he sees nothing else. He is so absorbed in the reverence and awe of God that he hardly realizes what he is doing. He does not order others, but does everything himself. He does it quickly. He endured it in silence because of God’s Word.

Verse 5. The slaves were left behind because they would not have understood what Abraham wanted to do.

Verse 6. Isaac carried the tree. Abraham carries the knife and the fire. They went up the mountain together. Isaac is not aware of the situation, but he was ready to comply nonetheless.

Verse 7.8. Abraham does not want to torment his son, but says that God will take care of him.

Verse 9. The altar is built, the wood is laid out. Scripture is silent about what happened between father and son. Abraham must have told Isaac what the Lord commanded. What extraordinary faith made it possible for Isaac to turn away from life so suddenly and give himself up to death.

Abraham bound his son Isaac and laid him on the tree.

Verse 10. Abraham raised his knife to kill his son. The boy looks up at the sky, sticks out his throat, and waits. Isaac was tied like a calf to the burnt offering and was to be killed when the priest cut his throat. The boy obeys like a lamb to the slaughter. He doesn’t open his mouth.

Only Jesus surpasses this obedience.

Verse 11. The victory of faith lies in overcoming the fear of death so that we may triumph forever.

II. Corinthians 1:9 – “We have put our hope in the living God, who raises the dead!”

God’s view of death. What does death mean to Him? With this act, as if with some kind of show, God wanted to draw the attention of all future generations to the fact that in His eyes death is nothing more than a sport – and the human race’s empty little bugaboo. Death to God is not death, but only the sleep of the body.

Both Abraham and Isaac believe that God not only can raise the dead, but also that He wants to. Man must learn to know God and thereby understand and kill death.

Abraham thought, “My son Isaac, whom I must kill, is the heir of the promise, and this is the Word of God. Since the Word of God is always true and must come to pass, then my son will live forever. Therefore, even if he did that now dies, it does not cease to exist, but is resurrected.”

Paul also mocked death and asked with faith: “Death, where is your sting?”

God delights in working mighty miracles out of thin air. Isaac was a special miracle in his birth. Here is victory over death, sin is destroyed in such faith and obedience, Isaac returns from the dead, actually restored from ashes, and out of nothing becomes the father of nations.

Verse 11: God in heaven and all the angels were watching. A special angel was present and watching Abraham the whole time. As he raised the knife, he called Abraham by name, saying, “Don’t do anything to the boy.” Abraham obeys as the angel brings a word that confirms God’s promise.

The angel adds, “Now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”

It is God’s fatherly test to instill faith and love in us.

Verse 13. The angel is gone. Abraham and his son look up and see a ram behind them in a thicket – its horns are held in the branches. The ram was made by God to take the place of a man, the figure of Christ.

Verse 14. Abraham called the place “The Lord will see”. It means a relationship between God who fears God, calls upon God and gives thanks, and accepts or hears vows and prayers.

Verse 15. The last conversation the Lord had with Abraham.

Verse 16. The majestic God not only promises, but also swears, and He does this of Himself. There is none greater to swear by. In fact, God says, “If I do not keep my promises, I will no longer be who I am.” In this way, God descends to our level to meet our weakness. Therefore we must learn to think of God with our understanding, but as He has revealed Himself and condescended to speak and deal with us.

Hebrews 6:17,18 – “Therefore, when God wished to show more convincingly the immutable nature of the intention of the heirs of the promise. He swore thus by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to prove false, that we who have fled for refuge may be strongly encouraged to lay hold of the hope before us.”

This is the only place in Scripture that states that God swore. All other references put it as a past event – all probably referring to this section.

Verses 17,18. Through your Seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed

Paul declares that this promised Seed is Christ (Galatians 3:16). This applies to all nations. This Seed sets aside all other blessings and righteousness and gives us His own. This Seed not only causes the blessing, but He is the blessing itself. We are blessed from Him and in Him.

Only God can truly bless—freeing all nations from the curse of sin is God’s work alone, not man’s or angels’. The promised Seed is true God and true man in one person; man as the Seed of Abraham; God, because He gives the blessing. A man born of a virgin, of the Holy Spirit, without sin.

This blessing is so powerful and effective that it destroys both death and the entire curse brought upon us as a result of original sin.

This promise was recognized by Abraham as a reward and adornment given by God to show that God bestows unlimited benefits on believers who call on His name.

Verse 19 After offering the ram, the father and son rejoiced and praised God with a grateful heart. They returned to Beersheba and Sarah with joy, peace and certainty.

17 By faith, Abraham offered Isaac when he was tested, and he who received the promises, his only son, Gen.
18 of whom it was said: In Isaac shall thy seed be called:
19 accounting that God was able to raise him even from the dead; from where he also received it in shape.

If you have little faith and are constantly worried and afraid about money and the small things of the world, then you do not know God very well. If you fret over every headache, stomach ache, and lump or bump, you don’t have much faith in God. If you seek your own pleasure and make the best of life, then you fear God just a little. If you fear death and do good works to make peace with God, then you have not even met God.

This is the greatest sin; you do not regard yourself as God, but make yourself a graven image of your own righteousness.”

Abraham’s example calls us to put our full trust in God’s Word—His sure and unchanging promises. We must be more and more hopeful, because since the time of Abraham, God gave his own Son, that promised seed, as a gift and as a sure pledge of the heavenly blessings yet to come.

Any form of worship that you choose is not worship at all… The only worship that pleases God is faith that obeys God, trusts in His grace, mercy, and salvation through Jesus Christ.
