Why I Don’t Envy Peter Pan

Why don’t I want to be Peter Pan?

JM Barrie’s Peter Pan story is about a mischievous boy who never grows up. With his infinite youth and ability to fly, he was definitely the envy of adults – something I didn’t quite understand when I first watched Disney’s animation as an 8-year-old.

What was so bad about being an adult?

It must have been good to be a kid; I had a blue Transformer bike that I rode everywhere, my Pokemon card collection was admirable, and I lived for Saturday morning cartoons. But being older always seemed more glamorous; no one ever yelled at the adults, they could just hop in their car and go wherever they wanted without question.

My fear of growing up grew bigger and stronger the older I got. When I hit puberty at age 12, I assumed I was a grown woman. I took on a new attitude of thinking I could do anything, anytime, but my parents kept shutting me down.

I foolishly clung to this belief as a teenager, and it wasn’t until I graduated college that I realized how ridiculous I was.

Being an adult isn’t about paying rent with your parents’ money or partying all night at the house down the road and waking up at 6am to go to your morning class. Being an adult is about exploring, navigating and balancing the dark and beautiful sides of life.

I discovered this when I was working at my first job; I worked long, grueling hours for a devil. I hated it, but it paid for my car and taught me a few things about how the professional world works. It paved the way for my career and here I am finally doing what I love.

But maybe the most important thing about being an adult is to know that bad days are always lurking around the corner, and know that it’s okay if you don’t know how to handle them. We are prone to mistakes and mishaps; it’s how we stand out from them that makes the difference.

So, if you find yourself approaching your twenties or celebrating your 45th birthday with a frown, remember that “grown up” is a very good thing.

1. You don’t have to do what you don’t want to do.

Your friends go to this hot new club, but all you have to do is stay in, put on your pajamas, order a pizza, and binge-watch B-movies. The guilt and fear of missing out fades as you get older.

2. You start living for quiet nights.

Maybe have some friends over for Scrabble and Cranium, or just stay in bed and read – at least that’s what works best for me. What better way to unwind after a long week than with some peace and quiet?

3. You realize you need a break from people.

Sure, your friends are probably wonderful people, but being surrounded by people all the time can be emotionally draining. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to be alone.

4. You travel more.

I’m on my next vacation and have crossed five countries off my bucket list so far. The older you get, the less people question you about your whereabouts and plans, which makes traveling less stressful. There’s a beautiful world waiting for your grown ass to explore, even if it means traveling solo.

5. You realize how amazing your body is.

As teenagers and college students, we used and abused our bodies until they broke. But now that you’re older, you step back and slow down. You may eat better, drink less, quit smoking, and exercise because you are beginning to understand the importance of health.

6. He plans his weekend around the tasks to be completed.

Saturday mornings are usually spent running errands and treating myself to a manicure. It’s the perfect way to feel productive and have some fun.

7. You take fewer pictures.

When I was younger, I felt obligated to take pictures of everything I did. Now, at 26, I don’t even think to take out my phone and I don’t have the patience to take a picture. I try to live in the moment and understand that memories always stay in my head.

8. You realize that being an adult also means having fun and never losing touch with your inner child.

Perhaps this is Péter Pan’s message to his readers. It’s all about balance and navigation!

Being an adult isn’t so bad; it is a time of self-realization and self-enlightenment—if we do it right. I wonder if Peter Pan feels left out now…
