Lemp Mansion: One of the Top Ten Most-Haunted Houses in America

Lemp mansion. His story has everything. From wealth to suicide, from beer barons to eccentrics, this stone mansion was built in 1868 and ruled over the social elite of St. Louis, Missouri for almost a decade. Frequent visitors included horror great Vincent Price, visiting dignitaries and the upper crust of St. Louis. Built above a cave of winding underground cave systems, its secret passages, darkened corridors and history of suicides are home to the paranormal events that occur daily at the famous Bed and Breakfast.

During my initial research of the Lemp Mansion, I was struck by the heavy feel of the interior. The pristine white facade does not prepare you for the dark oak paneling, the imposing staircase and the stained glass windows inside. It feels like we’re leaving the 21st century on the doorstep as we enter a world created by the insanely rich denizens of the golden age of beer. You get the feeling of walking into someone else’s environment; a voyeuristic feeling that hangs over the entrance, as if the owners of the mansion have just stepped outside and are about to return to find a stranger walking their outdated floorboards. That feeling remains when you glimpse the first-floor parlors, dining rooms, and ancient bathrooms, which still feature original marble tubs, stained glass windows, and 19th-century tiles.

So what happened in this home where money was no object and a beer dynasty was born? It all started with the sudden death of William Jacob Lemp’s youngest son, Frederick. William never recovered from the shock and later shot himself in the upstairs bedroom.

The family curse continued when Elsa Lemp Wright, William’s only daughter, then the richest woman in St. Louis, shot herself in the heart one morning while her husband was showering in their master bath in a luxury mansion not far from the Lemp home. . Her suicide came just 12 days after she remarried her ex-husband, making the suspension dependent on her movements that morning. The fact that her husband waited several hours to report the death only whetted the public’s insatiable appetite for information about the strange death of another wealthy man in town.

After William Lemp committed suicide, the torch of the dynasty passed to William’s second son, Billy Lemp, who aloofly managed the heavy burdens of the gigantic breweries while their biggest competitor, Anheuser Busch, was breathing down his neck. As Prohibition, declining sales, and the Depression got the better of him, Billy also shot himself to the left of the mansion’s front door, in what is now the dining room.

Three suicide shots in one family. You’d think the pall hanging over the home would be pleased. Yet there would be a fourth and final death in the home in 1949, when Charles Lemp, the third son, shot himself in his bedroom. In the days leading up to his suicide, he became a notorious recluse and germaphobe. For fear of contamination, money was laundered, shoes were left outside the door (and washed), and visitors were discouraged. One of the few allowed into the dark sanctuary was horror movie star Vincent Price, who was a friend of Charles.

On the morning of Charles’ death, two shots rang out in the quiet home. Only two servants were present. Mr. Lemp shot his faithful dog and then himself. He didn’t want to leave the dog alone without her. And this is where the terrible tragedies of Lemp Mansion end… or does it?

During my two-night stay at the castle, I was shocked by the sheer number of paranormal events. For a lady who has slept in the beds of the world’s most haunted places, that’s quite a confession.

The first night I was given the room in the attic, where a lot of activity was reported. I was not disappointed. A little before one in the morning, something started kicking the side of my bed. At the time, I had the impression that it felt like a petulant child kicking a wall. At 5:30 that same morning, I woke up to pressure on both sides of my leg through the blanket. The room was still dark and it took all my courage to reach for my cell phone and shine its light at my feet, not knowing what the small light would illuminate. There were two small prints in the blanket on each side of my foot that looked like a child’s shoe. The impressions remained long after the sensation of weight had ceased. A little boy was later said to have died in that attic room; the deformed child belonging to the Lemp family.

The next night I got the Lavender Lady’s room on the 2nd floor. This is a spacious suite with a clawfoot tub bathroom and a seating area. There was a ghost tour in the hallways when I entered my room. My sister and nephew who live in St. Louis came to spend the night with me. As I collapsed onto the bed, the antique chandelier above me went crazy with flickering lights. This went on for several minutes while my sister whimpered beside me. Finally I thought of my phone and grabbed it, clicked on the camera and switched to video. I picked up the erratic flashing and then started asking questions. I asked him to stop flashing if someone in the room had caused the deceased. It stopped immediately. I then asked her to blink once if the person causing the interference died in that room. He blinked once. By now my sister is begging me to “don’t talk to him!” This went on for another 5 minutes and finally the “verbal” volleyball ended. The light of the lamp remained steady and did not answer my questions.

At 5:15 the next morning, as I was lying in bed getting ready to get up and pack for a plane, I heard two loud gunshots coming from the bedroom door. It felt like ice water had been poured into my veins. My heart was pounding. Soon the barking of a large dog was heard over the top of the gun reports. There are no pets at Lemp Mansion and the staff does not check in until 10am. My nephew woke up and said he just heard a big dog. He didn’t hear the gunshots.

Charles Lemp shot his dog and then himself that fateful morning in 1949. I firmly believe that I have heard of the so-called residual specter: a replayed loop from the past.

To this day, the Lemp Mansion is the most haunted place I have come across. We recommend visiting this famous bed and breakfast in St. Louis. A word of advice… buy a flashlight!
