Getting the Kids to Bed
When children don’t go to bed easily, it can color every aspect of family life – EVERYONE is grumpy when they don’t get enough sleep!
Here are some quick tips for getting your kids to bed – and keeping them there!
1. Wear them out. I have a friend who raised twin boys, and his biggest piece of parenting advice was: Every afternoon, rain or shine, he took them for a “forced walk.” The boys had to walk about 30-45 minutes (depending on their age). They whined the whole time, but he hung tough. Enduring it guaranteed him some free time while they napped. Translate this to your children. Go on a family bike ride, play Wii, or make a workout video as a group. They will sleep better – and so will you!
2. Get a routine. I’ll admit, we’re bad at keeping to a schedule. With three kids of very different ages and different activities, it’s hard to keep a schedule when you have basketball, homework, and just want to be with your big brothers. But we eat at the same time as much as we can and try to put the kids to bed at the same time every night. Sometimes we do better than others, but a goal keeps us motivated.
3. Turn off the light! The little ones don’t want to miss anything, so if there’s a lot of noise or light, they go up and down like the stock market. Keep things quiet and dark. If that means doing your own activities elsewhere in the house, do it. I often have to “lock the house” before the kids go to bed, but it’s worth it.
4. Bribe them. Give me some motivation! My husband told my youngest that if she would sleep in her own bed for two weeks, he would get her a puppy. It worked, but then we got stuck with the puppy — and we were getting up and down to take him out while he was house-trained, losing more sleep than if our 4-year-old was in bed with us! So try bribing him with small things like, oh, a STUFFED puppy.
5. Get them up early. Move the family clock up. If you (and your kids) get up early, you go to bed early. Now that I get up at 5am to go to the gym, I’m ready to cut hay by 8:30am. The kids too, so we’re all applying much earlier than before. The only problem? I can’t stay up later than them to enjoy the peace and quiet!
