The Dish: Whoa Canada!
The US men’s ice hockey team was a disaster waiting to happen.
Most people got caught in a blizzard before the games started. Several of them were over 60 years old. And they had the mental toughness and discipline of former FEMA director Michael “Brownie” Brown. The fact that they lost 1-4-1 in Turin is not surprising. Keith Tkachuk embarrassed himself with worse hands than Daniel Day Lewis in my Left Leg throughout the tournament, and Mike Modano humiliated himself and complained about his hotel arrangements afterward. They should have suckled, and they did.
But what the hell happened to Canada? I called a repeat Canadian Gold at this location a few weeks ago and well, not so much. (However, you remember me saying that Russia and Finland were dramatically underrated.) Typical of Team Maple Leaf’s frustrating tournament, the only footage I saw of Wayne Gretzky during Canada’s quarterfinal loss to Russia last Wednesday was of Wayne in a suit jacket stood and tie, spitting on the floor of the rink. I think it’s better than a recording of him calling his bookie.
Speaking of old: In retrospect, including Joe Sakic (36), Rob Blake (34) and Adam Foote (34), it turned out to be a huge mistake. In such a compressed tournament, the fresh legs of, say, Sydney Crosby and/or Jason Spezza would surely have looked good in red. Joe Thornton was an unmitigated disaster, Vincent Lecavalier was injured, Rick Nash barely got a stick on the puck, and Chris Pronger took another penalty on the flight home from Italy. And the fallout from the Gretzky gamble certainly took its toll.
Sure, the USA was terrible. But frankly, they were horrible on paper and their best player was literally 44 years old. Meanwhile, Canada was clearly the best team in this tournament, no question about that, and they lost three times. Amazing.
There were indications (in this area) that the Winter Olympics would be largely non-factor in terms of sports betting. Was that so? At least people could get up to play hockey? What do you think of North America’s struggles this tournament?
Greg Jorssen, BoDog.com: The Olympics weren’t a factor, except for hockey. We handled the matches well, especially the quarter-finals. Of course, the games that got the most traction involve Americans. Unfortunately, most punters thought the Fins would win their quarterfinal match against the United States. The poor play of the Americans in the round-robin games swayed the bettors against them. The Americans fielded a very old team, which does not favor the bigger pitches in international play. As for the Canadians, I’m still scratching my head with them. The young players didn’t seem to have the passion and drive we’re used to, and it was clear in their defeats against the Swiss and the Finns.
Has the Daytona 500 made serious strides? Was Jimmie Johnson’s win a (relatively) big win for the books?
GJ, BoDog.com: NASCAR doesn’t get the handle I want, mostly because of the unpredictability of the sport. In football, if a receiver blows out his hamstring, the game continues and the team still has a legitimate chance to win. In NASCAR, if Tony Stewart blows a tire, he’s probably over. A lot of weird things happened at the Daytona 500 that lead me to believe that NASCAR will never be predictable enough in any race to attract a massive handle. As for Jimmie Johnson’s botched win (c’mon, his car was illegally modified), it was a favorable result for the books. However, I wonder how this controversy will affect Johnson in future races.
I think we got an answer from the Villanova hoops team; they leapfrogged UConn and are second behind Duke in the weekly poll. How do you see the Villanova at UConn game this weekend? What do books hope for?
GJ, BoDog.com: UConn will certainly be favored because of home field advantage and the handle they usually get on home favorites, I suspect we’ll be big Villanova fans again this weekend. Like I said before, UConn is the better team and will jump back in front of ‘Nova come Monday morning.
Last week, I asked which college hoops team could come out of nowhere and stun people on their way to the Sweet 16. This week I’m setting my sights a little higher. If I had to pick a team currently outside the AP Top 16 that could stun people and make it to the Final Four, I’d say LSU. And what about you?
GJ, BoDog.com: LSU is a good pick again; however, I always go back to Michigan State year after year. Izzo has this uncanny ability to focus his team at the right time and is fielding a team this year that is as talented as any team in the past. Maurice Ager leads the team in scoring right now and his hot hand (if on) could easily lead the Spartans to the Final Four. With Shannon Brown playing as well as he is now and Paul Davis being a consistent force night in and night out, they are my team right now and I will be riding my team this year!!!!!
