Why Finger Painting Is Good for Kids – And Doesn’t Need to Be Messy!
Kids love, love, LOVE sticky things. They like to put their hands in it, they like to put their toes in it – sometimes even throw it. They really come alive when there are colorful sticky things around them.
But unfortunately, the children’s enjoyment is usually equaled or even exceeded by their parents’ terrifying horror of the goo. The new curtains! The cream carpet! The Persian carpet!
This is a shame because finger painting has been shown to have important developmental benefits for children:
Stimulates the senses
Finger painting is an activity that involves almost all of our senses. Bright, bold colors that excite the eye, the satisfying squishy feel of paints between fingers, the pleasant squealing sound of little hands dipping into the pots.
Stimulating children’s senses is essential for the healthy development of their young brains. Experiencing different textures and colors helps stimulate creativity, and using your fingers to draw pictures is a great way to develop hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
It helps children express themselves
Finger painting has been around for centuries, but its modern form was created in the 1930s by Ruth Faison Shaw, the “first lady of finger painting”. He was among the first to recognize its therapeutic potential and was hailed as a “pioneer of progressive education.”
At a time when many believed that children should be seen and not heard, she believed that finger painting was important for children to communicate their unspoken words and feelings. The instinctive nature of finger painting, she said, “helps the imagination and gives you the joy of creating things subconsciously—things you might not have seen or dreamed of before.”
Here’s why it doesn’t have to be messy
So you know the benefits of finger painting for children, but one thing is still holding you back. The mess. But I promise, it really doesn’t have to be messy.
Perhaps the most obvious reason why not is because (weather permitting) this can be done outdoors. Children love the combination of being in the fresh air and doing something creative. And they can’t do much damage out there. For children, a towel-covered apron will cover their clothes, and you can use an old tablecloth or sheet to protect the surface they are painting on.
But the biggest reason finger painting doesn’t have to be messy is that many finger paints are completely washable. All you need is a cloth and some soapy water and the paint can be wiped off. This means that no matter how hard they try, your children will never be able to harm you. No stains – no need to worry.
But don’t take my word for it. Sometimes you just have to try these things for yourself. Finger painting is one of the simplest and cheapest children’s activities. It’s brilliant fun, helps kids learn and develop, and you can enjoy it with them. So fear no more – roll up your sleeves (and hers) and give it a try!
