Golden Spotted Deer – Based On An Episode In The Epic Ramayana

The great philosopher Socrates taught his students to never accept anything without question. The question of why must be answered honestly and unflinchingly, and it takes great moral courage and an irrepressible sense of adventure to take things to their logical conclusion, which can be unpleasant and provoke a violent reaction from an uninformed public, especially when religion is involved. Give me the hardness! I sincerely apologize in advance. The theme is Sita, whom I respect the most, Ram, the maryada purushottam, revered throughout India, and Laksman, the loyal brother who sacrificed his family life to protect his brother and sister-in-law, on their long and winding journey. across the subcontinent, ignoring the threats of wild beasts and asuras. Be extremely careful!

All went well until the fourteenth year of their picnic-like trip, enjoying the splendor of primeval forests and emerald green hills. Then tragedy struck, like in a Hollywood movie.

A lovely golden deer appeared near the cottage where the princely trio was camping. Her beauty and innocent eyes charmed the princess. He just wanted it! He was told that he was no ordinary animal; it was some evil creature with an ulterior motive to harm them. They had already incurred the wrath of Shoorpanaka (Surpanakha in the south) and killed his brothers who attacked them. They expected trouble.

But Sita does not hear. He wanted the golden deer. Finally, her husband relented. Entrusting the safety of his consort to his faithful brother, Ram went after the animal.

Oh help Lakshman: I am in imminent danger – When Sita heard these cries, she urged Lakshman to go and help Ram. When she was told that Ram could defend herself and that it was a trick of an evil spirit in the guise of an animal, Sita became enraged, went wild, and accused Lakshman of having dirty motives in entertaining her to possess her after Ram fell dead. That was the last straw! Lakshman immediately left, leaving Sita defenseless. A sanyasi (a hermit) comes in asking for alms. All Hindus respect and welcome such people. The unsuspecting Sita comes out of the hut and is abducted by Ravana to avenge the mistreatment of his sister Shoorpanaka. The seed is sown in Ram vs. Ravana for war.

In this single episode, poet Valmiki shows his superior qualities in terms of plot, characterization and human psychology! We are concerned with certain fundamental questions arising from the whole series of events.

1) The first question: why did Sita act like a nine-year-old girl crying for a Barbie doll?

Sita is no ordinary woman. She gave up the pleasures of palace life and went to the forest with her husband naked. This shows her high moral standards and extraordinary devotion to her beloved husband. During their stay in the forest, they must have come across hundreds of deer and petted them. Therefore, the sight of the golden deer should not have excited you. When told that it was no ordinary deer, but some evil spirit masquerading as a deer, determined to take revenge, Sita should have been convinced. In fact, any dutiful wife with some sense of responsibility will willingly agree with her husband and forget about the deer. Why did Sita, of such high standards and impeccable character, who was completely devoted to her husband, cling to him?

2) As a responsible husband, Ram should have convinced his wife of the futility of capturing the deceitful deer. Why didn’t he succeed in this? When he was absolutely convinced that the deer was a mirage, he should not have moved. Why did you fail? He could have beaten his wife for being so stupid and adamant, why didn’t he?

3) When Laksman left his wife and accompanied the princely couple, he had only one thing in mind: to protect his beloved brother and sister-in-law. He should have clearly told Sita that Ram is safe and there is nothing to worry about. Unable to face Sita’s vulgar insinuations, he could have pretended to leave but actually hid in a nearby bush. Why didn’t you do that?

4) Ravan was a very strong and brave warrior. When his sister Soorpanaka was insulted and had her breasts and nose cut off (did they have to do that to a woman?), she should have challenged the princes to a fight and not sneaked into the hut as a thief.

and stole Sita. His wife Mandodari actually advised Ravan to refrain from this heinous crime. Did he have better feelings for the lovely princess and was just waiting for an excuse?

The principle of unpredictability

All people are subject to irrational and mysterious reactions from time to time. It is difficult to cite examples from my own life. Most of the time it took me like a current, as if I had no will of my own. I recently started writing and I’m a little nervous. We did not fare badly when my father was separated from our ancestral home and wandered from one place to another. When he finally built a house and settled down, he called her. Mother, a young widow, and we four children, all under sixteen, were left with practically no income. Why did you break up with me in the first place? Napoleon Buonaparte was a great statesman. He wrote a lot during his last days in prison on St. Helena Island. It’s still worth reading today. Why did he want to conquer the world? Hitler could have remained undefeated if he had not attacked the Soviet Union. Why didn’t Kamsa put Vasudeva and Devaki in separate cells in the prison?

Each person carries an invisible burden, which I call spiritual baggage, made up of what they have seen and experienced, and which is stored in their computer called their brain. It works even when you’re asleep. Poets and writers try to dissect it. Scientists don’t even know what’s going on there. We always blame something or other without understanding anything. This baggage impairs our judgment at critical moments.

I strongly believe in Him. My reason says that He is everywhere. It is not necessary to go to church. But I enjoy traveling to any temple. It’s very comforting. My Christian friend might like it if it’s a church. A Malayalam Muslim poet wrote a beautiful hymn in praise of Sree Guruvayoorappan (Delhi has a temple of the deity Krishna) which ends with a plea that at least in the next janam, he may have a chance to have the darshan of the temple deity. (If I am authorized, I will allow all devotees to enter the temple freely as in Gurudwaras)

Return to Sita.

You will have to answer a number of uncomfortable questions. Why didn’t he resist when he realized he was not a sanyasi? Ravan had a curse. If he touched a woman against her wishes, he would perish. How was he able to drag her into the helicopter without touching her? (Pushpaka viman). Why didn’t she jump out and commit suicide, as any meek schoolgirl might now? Why didn’t he fast unto death as Medhaji would do now? He finally ended his life when a repentant Ram asked him to come back to Ayodhya from the forest, from where he had been unceremoniously and slyly banished simply because a worthless laundress had made some disparaging remarks about his stay in Ravan’s custody. Why didn’t he show the same spirit back then?

RAM:

He never acted like a gentleman. He hid and killed Bali when the latter was fighting with Sugriv, his own brother. (What a curse on humanity! Brothers rarely remain friends – Ambani vs Ambani). When the dying Bali confronted him with the question, why did you cowardly kill Ram instead of showing compassion for the dying hero (Bali is a remarkable warrior. He once humiliated Ravan by holding him with his tail and dipping Ravan in the sea again and again !) abused him left and right: “Who are you to question me? Do you know that I belong to the Ikshuki race? just a monkey. He took his brother’s wife illegally. You deserve to die”. A gentleman should be more polite to a dying hero. Will George Bush use such words on a dying Bin Laden?
