His Most Famous Painting (Two Children Are Threatened by a Nightingale) – Max Ernst
Max Ernst (April 1891 – April 1976) was an intellectual artist, German painter, sculptor, graphic artist and poet. One of the key founders of “Dadaism” and “Surrealism”, Max enrolled at the University of Bonn in 1909, where he studied philosophy and abnormal psychology, which served as material for his art. He turned seriously to painting in 1912, but only in 1918, after his war service, did he begin to develop his own unique style. He made a series of collages from illustrations of medical and technical magazines, juxtaposing bizarre images. In 1924, Ernst created his famous painting: “Two children threatened by a nightingale”.
This 69.8 x 57.1 x 11.4 cm (27 1/2 x 22 1/2 x 4 1/2 in.) oil painting originates from one of the instincts of irrational panic that we are fully aware of. and conscious. In this painting, a red wooden gate superficially affixed to the painted surface of the canvas acts as the entrance to the shepherd image, dividing most of the artwork with a blue sky. “Two children threatened by a nightingale” – depicts a girl who is frightened by a flying bird (Ernst’s works often featured birds) and is holding a knife. Another passes out on the ground. A man is seen on the roof carrying a baby. He tries to balance with his hand to grab the doorknob. The button is attached to the old-fashioned three-dimensional accessory of the canvas. The combination of different elements on different planes uses the collage technique.
The little bird that turns scary, despite its considerable size, the inaccessibility of the alarm bell, the elements of dreams and fantasies. Two Children Threatened by a Nightingale contains elements of traditional European painting, such as the illusion of death, the dominating sky, formal poses, the architectural style of the dome and tower, and the triumphal arch. Moreover, the painting violates the traditional painting rules of staying within the frame. “Two Children Threatened by a Nightingale” “actually” breaks out of the frame, such as the bell, the gate and the house, superficial, three-dimensional, physical objects.
In Max’s film Two Children Threatened by a Nightingale, viewers sense a sense of oscillating between the real and the imaginary, the creative and the actual. The scene seems fake and purely imaginary, but it is also quite elementary or childish. Nothing in the picture makes sense. Still, despite the traditional boundaries, the overall experience is incredible. Ernst dared to recreate a feeling that was quite familiar to us through our dreams. The elements of the painting show complete disorientation. They seem to belong in a fantasy world where scales, volumes and functions have their own unique tangent. This masterpiece is currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
