Teaching and Ventriloquism Educate – Interview With Nancey Ambrose, a MA Ventriloquist and Teacher

1. What should every ventriloquist do?

The most important thing a ventriloquist needs to do is to PRACTICE every day! The best way to practice is in front of the mirror. Work on manipulation, lip control, memorizing your script, and above all, just have fun with your puppet! Practice sitting in front of the TV is a great way to learn how to ad lib. In order to control my lips, I practice in the car without moving my lips! Sometimes I sing along with the songs without moving my lips.

2. What should every ventriloquist avoid?

Every ventriloquist is different. Those who want to become ventriloquists should avoid copying what they see.

I suggest: (1) Find what works for you. Find information and talk to people who ask specific questions. what do you feel good about? What type of figure do you want to use – a hard figure or a soft doll? Both have advantages!

(2) If you have decided, go! Never let anyone discourage you! Start practicing. You can even practice by hand! Think about your character. This is a big decision! Write a biography for your puppet. Ask questions and get to know him!

3. Is this ventriloquist stuff here to stay?

Totally! Ventriloquism has been around for a long time and will be around for a long time. I go to the CONVENTION in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky, where over 400 people attend each year, an amazing amount of people interested in ventriloquism to attend a convention in the middle of summer! Many young people also participate in these congresses.

Jeff Dunham’s video sales exceeded expectations last year. More people watched talk shows in their homes than ever before. Dunham appeared on Comedy Central in her own special. No TV station will air a special on a ventriloquist unless they think it will be watched repeatedly.

Dunham’s second DVD will be released soon, and Comedy Central will air her second special in September 2007. Terry Fator, winner of the television show “America’s Got Talent,” is a ventriloquist, which is impressive because there have been thousands of different types. actions. Many families have enjoyed great ventriloquism at home!

4. Can someone successfully work as a ventriloquist if they are in a crowded niche?

YES! You have to find what works for you. Remember not to copy anyone else. Practice consistently and master your craft.

Create your own characters and show! Easier said than done, but it can be done. Many professional ventriloquists work full-time at their craft. They worked long hours for success.

5. What did ventriloquism do for you?

Ventriloquism has allowed me to take what I do professionally and combine ventriloquism with it. I work with children with cancer. I can take my puppets into hospitals and outpatient clinics to work directly with these children. Some of the children don’t want to talk, but many times they will talk to a puppet that I bring in. Parents also love it, because they know how much children love puppetry.

Some puppets and I were able to stay with the children during the painful treatments, which calms them down. I also carry other dolls that the children can use. Siblings often join in the fun as they have many fears as well. The puppets sometimes spent the night in the hospital. For example, I remember a 13-year-old girl who underwent an extremely difficult operation. He was angry and didn’t want to talk to anyone. I brought a six foot dodo bird. He spoke to the bird and asked if he could stay with him for the night. I happily complied with your request. Her mother said her daughter spoke through the bird puppet and her speech was happy. In the morning, she was ready to be herself again.

I also have bald ventriloquist figures and wigs to cover their bald heads if needed. Many children love to see that the puppets can be just like them!

6. What trends do you currently see in ventriloquism?

I see ventriloquism being used in so many different areas! I see it in comedies as well as in churches, birthday shows, magic shows, singing and hospitals.

7. When did you first become interested in ventriloquism?

I loved dolls when I was a kid! When I got my master’s degree in early childhood education and child life (working with hospitalized children), I did an entire program for a preschool teaching them about doctors and hospitals. That’s when I used my first plastic ventriloquist figure with a broken arm and put the cast on. We talked about what it was like to go to the hospital. The kids loved it, as did the other teachers and parents. It was very good.

My first real job was putting together a school program because it was that time of year when the kids were back at school; this concept had to be explained to the class. I devised a program with some puppets and performed it with a friend, which the class, teachers and parents loved. Now I give a short program to small groups where a girl character talks about cancer and how it affects life.

It’s great to be able to do what I do!
