May-December Relationships – Am I Wrong To Feel This Way?

Hi! Guess? There is a new reality show called “Age of Love”. It’s supposed to be about relationships with a huge age gap – the “summer/winter romance” cliché. It just happens that I have something to say. Can you believe it?

I received an email from an old friend the other day. This is a guy I met through other friends about 7-8 years ago. We instantly became friends because we had so much in common – we grew up in the same era, the late 60s and 70s. We were both adopted by older parents who were all very religious. We both had the same high IQ – we played Scrabble non-stop – not for hours, but for days! We got along so well that I was 2 years older, nothing to do with him.

Well, remember, we were friends – that’s all. Trust me, there is NOTHING like physical attraction of any kind. He’s the opposite of “my type” – he was about 2 inches taller than me and probably weighed 140 pounds soaking wet. Ouch! I love a man who can pick me up! I’m a “healthy” size girl. It would be like a goldfish and a little one getting together! Eww!

So, this sets up my scenario: He emails me that he got a new chick! It’s been a while – she went through a bitter divorce – another reason we became close – my husband just died – neither of us wanted “that” type of deal – so…you get it, right? Anyway, he goes on to say that he’s 26 – okay, wait! What is this? 20 years younger than him? Ew! Okay, that’s my first reaction.

Then I thought, how the hell did I not see how screwed up he could be? Why would a grown, 46-year-old man have a 14-year-old daughter (we had one more thing in common – Bree, my 14-year-old goddaughter, was living with me at the time) – why would he be more comfortable with a girl, yes, a girl, only 12 years older than his daughter? Are you so confused that your graduation level is going backwards? Have you lost the ability to be with people on the same level in life at 46? Can you date someone who is 66?

What is the difference in the way of thinking of the two types of men? The one who dates much younger women? Or the one who dates women old enough to be his mother? Ew!

The very thought of dating a 68-year-old man! Ick! Or a guy who was 28 years old! Imagine when he was 14, I was 34! My goodness, I just can’t fathom the connection! It’s 2 different worlds. So I’m 21 years old, my boyfriend is 1 year old! Cheers you up!

I’ve never been able to get it, although I’m fascinated by the bullshit—I mean, look at Joan Collins, Elizabeth Taylor, Cher, and who else? It looks so charming – but I’ll tell you the truth – if you could see my face now! You thought I was going to drink a glass of vinegar! I’m 28 years old and I’m dating an 8 year old boy! Oh my God!!! Just kill me now! I deserve it! Hahaha!

Well, true, it’s just a silly hang-up of mine. I know I’m dead wrong to be so self-absorbed, aloof and old-fashioned – but I can’t help it! It’s pretty weird and gross to me. So sue me! If I step on one of your toes and hurt someone, please forgive me, I mean no harm. Maybe you could give me a good reason why…!

So, the new show “Age of Love” would be a bit much for me. But you know I love those damn reality shows, so I’ll have to watch it sometime. I’ll let you know soon.

Until then, let’s talk about this age difference between us. Ask your friends too – I’d love to hear – you know me and this guy used to be close friends and I’m so hot I can never talk to him again. I HAVE to say something, and oh no, don’t introduce us and expect me to be “fake” – YOU KNOW it’s not me! I’ll tell you something – believe me! I don’t know what else to say.
