Bouldering in Bishop, California

I was breathing hard and my palms were sweating. I moved my hands and feet up the rock as my body’s muscles remembered, and I didn’t dare look down. I told myself I had to get up… and when I finally reached the top, a huge wave of relief washed over me… And that, my dear friends, was the story of how I climbed my first V0 highball. .

There was no grace, no finesse, and I’m sure I could have climbed it with a little more grace (which is considered the easiest bouldering grade in climbing), but I ended up with Ms. Never-Doing-a-Highball whiskey iced soda.

We had been dating for 4 months when David and I went on our first week-long trip together. I, for one, thought it was a relationship survival test disguised as a mountain climbing route, but what better way to learn if your boyfriend is the real deal than being locked in a metal box on wheels for 20 hours? Fortunately, contact was made alive and 20 hours later we arrived in the land of skin-splitting big balls.

The actual town of Bishop is quite large, and the residents and visitors consist not only of climbers, but also of other outdoor enthusiasts. Locals are blessed to have the popular bakery Erick Schat’s Bakkerÿ known for its original Sheeppherder Bread®. For us, their chili and cheese bread is a great way to refuel after a tough rock climb, although I’m sure many high-performance athletes would disagree…

We stayed at “The Pit” campsite for $2 USD a night. Our accommodation unit was David’s Green Honda Element, commonly known as “the Hulk”. The back of the SUV has been cleverly converted into our sleeping quarters, with a worn, sad-looking Madrock crash pad cushioning the hard plastic floor.

We had a simple routine the week we were there. I called it the “valley man routine”… (for no apparent reason other than it sounded pretty amazing). Days always begin with the sweet light of nature’s alarm clock, the sun. After eating a light breakfast of yogurt and cereal, we cleaned up, packed up our bumper pads, and headed straight into town for our first stop. We needed our daily caffeine fix and the “go-to” was the Looney Bean, a coffee shop off the main road. There we updated on our social media sites and wrote home to keep our family and friends alive.

After our morning chores, we went out to play!

There were three main rocky areas that David was most familiar with:

1) The Buttermilks (your favorite)

2) The happy rocks

3) The Sad Boulders (my favorite)

On the first day we visited Happy’s. It was quite cloudy in the afternoon, but the conditions were good. The warmer days made climbing more difficult due to less friction; the cooler days were favorable. Happy’s was where I climbed my first highball. I wasn’t all that keen at first, but if you’re in highball country, you’ve got to climb a highball…

After the first day of preparation for the week ahead, we headed back into town and picked up some essentials, namely food and toothbrushes. Our meals weren’t too extravagant, but they definitely beat other campers’ meals. (This happens quite often when your friend is an amazing cook, even with the most limited resources.)

On consecutive days, we climbed mainly in Milks. This climbing area is probably the best known, if not the most popular, area in Bishop. It is home to some of the toughest routes in the world, such as Mandala V12 and Evilution V11 in milks.

A unique feature of Milks are the highballs, which can be up to 5 stories high at their peak. While I dread highball climbing, watching other climbers improve their mental game is breathtaking and awe-inspiring.

We had two rest days during our entire stay. I spent one at a natural hot spring in a somewhat secret location (in which I will only reveal your whereabouts in exchange for your favorite secret location…or “the Google”); the other day of rest was spent in a secluded brush and weed, where we basked, played and drank beer. We also had a “pull out body hair with tweezers” game, but that got old very quickly.

Some evenings we made a big bonfire and invited our neighbors over for beer. One particular night I took out my ukulele and our neighbor Yve brought over her mandolin. We jammed together over the dancing flame and into the night. It’s pretty wild, yet it’s clear how one place can bring people from so many different paths together.

Bishop is one of my favorite climbing playgrounds. It is a region where the desert plains are dusted with sand-colored rocks that resemble colossal eggs; where the view from above is strikingly different, yet extremely magical. Bishop, we will meet again one day.
