Gifted Children

As a gifted child, I can definitely describe what it’s like to be different from the rest. At the age of fifteen, I graduated from high school – with a so-called academic diploma – and entered college.

As more and more children are born with these abilities, and if parents and teachers do not understand what these children are feeling and going through, there will be more suicides and school shootings. These children need to be understood and helped to understand why they are different and why they have gifts. Yes, these abilities are gifts and too many people feel they are curses instead. Every child wants to be accepted. This is the nature of the race – to be accepted into a social community.

All teenagers, gifted or not, feel different and inferior to other teenagers. Remember the reader’s own teenage years. Let the reader remember how he felt different and how he was not accepted by others. Very few teenagers belong to the “popular” group. Even those considered popular have their insecurities. I see this in my grandson. She’s beautiful, and I’m not saying that as her grandmother. Popular but still feeling insecure. He doesn’t know if people like him for himself or for his looks. He is also very sensitive. When someone says something negative to her, she cries and wonders why that person doesn’t like her.

Gifted children have friends in their age group. Once they are brought up to speed, those friends are left behind and must find new ones. This is not easy. The more they are accelerated into a higher rank, the harder it is for them to find friends. Boys have it harder than girls, although girls don’t have it easy.

I was lucky in that I had good teachers. My teachers cared about their students, all of them. Now things are a little different. Teachers fear their students. I have one teacher in mind in particular, and I sincerely hope that he is the exception.

This teacher feels that some children are born evil. He also feels that every child who commits a crime should go to prison. If the offense was committed when the child was nine years of age or older, the child must be sent to an adult prison. Yes, he recommends sending a nine-year-old to an adult prison. Now imagine if this teacher had a gifted student in her class. A gifted student is automatically marked as different from the rest of the class. Could you help this student find something interesting, or do you automatically see this student as a troublemaker and mark him as – he belongs in jail?

Because the child is gifted, the parent usually pushes the child to speed up even more. The parent expects the child to reach his or her potential. Sometimes a parent puts too much pressure on their child. Every child needs a little breathing room, and expecting a gifted child to achieve straight A’s is putting too much pressure on them.

A gifted child does not automatically grasp every subject. It also depends on how the child is taught. My IQ was tested and I got 168. That’s pretty high. IQ simply means how well a person grasps concepts. I couldn’t grasp the concept behind chemistry, although I did very well in math.

The only reason I mention this is because we all have different subjects that we speed up. Don’t expect a gifted child to excel in every subject. I know a mother who told her daughters that math is too hard for girls to understand. He also told his children that the moon was a planet, but that was the point. Because she said math was too hard for girls, her highly intelligent daughters had difficulty understanding math. The instructors didn’t help them. Until they understood that their problem stems from what their mother basically drilled into them from early childhood, they had problems with math. Once they figured out where the problem was coming from, they started speeding up.

Once a child is told that he does not understand something, he will automatically not understand it. If you push a child too hard to accelerate, they automatically fail. Once a child, any child, is neglected or neglected by a parent, that child will rebel against everything and everyone. Once gifted children are ostracized, this uncertainty will follow them throughout their lives.

Accept our children for who they are. If they excel at something – great. If not, find the cause of the error. Children are not born stupid. They simply know less than adults because adults have been around much longer and have learned more. Every child is precious. Every child has some remarkable ability. Help the child find it. Encourage—not discourage—each child to reach their true potential.
