Common Kick-Boxing Mistakes

When I think about being an old martial artist, I see things that say otherwise. Like the young guys in fancy gym clothes throwing these ridiculously slow kicks on the heavy punching bag. Before putting your head in your hands in a match or fight, please:

1. Raise your hand. A good boxer or boxer can step into the kick and knock out if they drop their hands.

2. Kick a lighter bag around 40 pounds. To give something. I went to a chiropractor all the time when I was training hard and still have hip problems 30 years later.

3. Work the bag, don’t let the bag work. Kick and punch to improve your punching power. Don’t just pound the heavy bag until it’s exhausted. You’ll just be careless.

4. If your trainer isn’t paying attention to you, try not to train to the point of exhaustion. When you are too tired. You will be careless. Sloppy practice makes for sloppy technique. While you should be able to train under stress or fatigue, be careful not to make careless mistakes. I used to train badly for weeks and then I had to retrain myself. It’s better to train less properly than too much wrong.

5. Avoid overtraining. You’ll know if you can’t sleep well, your appetite is bad, and your heart rate is racing. Underweight, skinny guys take note.

6. Train patiently. The whole of martial arts is the development of man. If you train intelligently, consistently and patiently, you will make more progress. The guy who is in a big hurry to just “break the head off” always takes longer.

7. Practice some humility. Real martial artists don’t frolic around town with “cage fighter” t-shirts and a boots-on-the-boots attitude. The skinny guy will only attract the attention of the bullies and the bellows will be taken down a notch or two. I’ve met world-class martial artists who don’t flaunt their skills. (One 19-year-old insisted he won 48 bare-knuckle matches. He also failed a simple fitness test, so it makes you wonder.)

8. Nail one technique at a time. Some methods, such as Hapkido, practice dozens of kicks and punches in each training session. This works after a few years. I found that by being proficient at a few strokes, I was ahead of most beginners. One good technique beats a dozen sloppy ones.

9. If you have to train, TRAIN. I’m sick of the guy claiming he works out 3 hours a day when he’s mostly just hanging around the gym chewing his gum. Have fun, socialize, but get serious training.

10. Jogging is not road work. Roadwork, as champion grappler Matt Furey described it, is running while you imagine you’re fighting. If you kickbox, practice your punches while running. If there are too many people around, practice footwork and wind sprints. Kickboxing matches are not at the intensity of jogging.

11. Most of all, enjoy training. If you don’t like exercise, try something else. Remember that professionalism does not come easily.
