Top Ten Ways to Encourage Young Scientists Over Summer Break

As we approach the end of the school year, I am looking into various educational activities that my children can participate in over the summer. I narrowed it down to my ten favorites:

10. The easiest place to start is in your own garden. Give the children a bug catcher, a magnifying glass, or just pencil and paper. Ask them to search the yard to see who and what lives there? Take it further and ask them to look at different locations (eg grandparents’ house, lakeside, friend’s yard, etc.). Encourage the children to find out what factors lead to organisms living in a particular environment.

9. Take a nature walk. There are so many hiking trails and paths in the United States that are not used by families for educational purposes. To this day, I hear from my children about the beaver they saw being built when they went on a nature walk in their kindergarten. It’s a great way to learn about the animals’ habitats.

8. Go outside and look up! There is so much to see in the sky on a clear night. The telescope makes it even more educational and valuable. We can see quite a lot without it. Don’t be afraid to use the internet to find out when and where the planets will be visible.

7. Go to a museum. This goes without saying, but depending on the age of the kids, you can visit any good museum multiple times and always find new things that you couldn’t see on a previous trip. As for Chicago, my kids really like the Museum of Science and Industry.

6. Take them to the Zoo! Big and small, all zoos offer plenty of opportunities for learning, and kids love going to zoos.

5. Take advantage of the programs offered by local parks. Many park districts offer events from reptile interactions to butterfly hunts to classes on dinosaurs and fossils. These are sure fires for children.

4. Start a rock collection. Ask the children to collect as many different types of rocks (or sea shells depending on where you live) and see how many they can identify. There are many great posters that can help you identify rocks, minerals or shells. A quick search on the Internet will help you find it.

3. Backyard bird identification. This is another activity that could be greatly aided by a Backyard Bird poster, again easily found with a quick internet search. You will be surprised at the variety of birds that visit the area.

2. Blow something up…..safely. I highly recommend doing this outdoors. Taking care not to get in the way of their faces, put a few rolls of soft-shell mints in a two-liter bottle of Diet Coke (don’t use regular Coke unless you want sugar to stick to everything). I saw a great product online that attaches to the top of a soda bottle and allows you to pull a string that safely releases the mint into the soda. You’ll be surprised how high the soda flies. Ask your children to scientifically explain why this happened.

1. My personal favorite science activity is taking my kids to an amusement park. If your children are younger, start with simpler questions to find out, such as why there is a height restriction on the ride. Older kids can really dissect the park with the help of physics: speed, acceleration, centrifugal and centripetal forces, height, friction, etc. by calculating. It always brings a smile to my face when my 6 year old explains to his little brother why people don’t fall off the upside down roller coaster!

Please share your ideas for more activities and adventures to help us shape the world’s future scientists. You need motivation… Just remind yourself that today’s children will be tomorrow’s caregivers!
