Babywearing, Not Just For Babies
Babywearing, an ancient practice in many countries, is now entering mainstream households in the United States. The range of carriers ranged from the usual backpacks and Baby Bjorns to the more stylish and versatile Ring Slings, Mei Tais, Pouches and more! When we think of babywearing, we imagine tiny newborns in the fetal position, close to their mom or dad’s heart, safe. However, babywearing is not just for babies.
Our adorable babies quickly grow into curious and rambunctious toddlers. The next thing you know they are running away from you; touching and exploring the world around them with fervor and enthusiasm. This is an exciting time in the lives of both parents and children, but sometimes a little refreshment is also necessary. Here are just a few of the benefits of ‘babywearing’:
1. Safety first: When you put your child in a carrier, you know exactly where he is. Getting out of the car, through the parking lot and into the store suddenly becomes a safe and pleasant experience. Instead of trying to hold your child’s hand to keep him from moving away, he is close to you and safe in your arms. If you’re in a carrier, you don’t have to worry about an unsuspecting driver not seeing your little one crossing the parking lot. You will be able to leisurely walk towards the store, enjoying the moment while talking about the colors of the cars that pass by.
2. Fight against bacteria: How many times have you called 911 but didn’t know how you were going to handle your luggage and your toddler in a germ-filled public restroom? You can wait until you get home or take out your carrier and have the “relief” of a comfortable ride home instead of a rush. When you have your hands free to get down to business, and when you’re carrying the toddler, he can’t pick up the dirty toilet paper off the bathroom floor or play with the germ lock in the stall. Yes, it sounds extreme, but desperate times call for desperate measures!
3. Cure Clingies: Toddlerhood is a confusing time in a child’s life. They fight all day between the baby and the big kid. When it all gets too much and they need to recharge themselves, they tend to cling to us as a static attachment. One of the best ways to cure “clingers” is to carry your toddler for extended periods of time during the day. This extra closeness, care and security will recharge your child and really encourage them to be more confident and independent.
4. Taming temper tantrums: Another pernicious effect of this startling period known as toddlerhood is the dreaded tantrum. They always seem to rear their ugly heads when you enter the store or grocery store. In her article “13 Ways to Encourage Good Behavior in Toddlers,” Dr. Sears recommends “Use wisdom when shopping” and “Bring your baby shoes.” When a child feels tired or overwhelmed, they tend to have meltdowns. Even in the chaotic environment of a shopping mall, you can relax, feel safe and relaxed when you are carrying your little one. This is a surefire way to tame the tantrum beast.
These are just a few of the many benefits of wearing an older baby. For me, the best use was recently when I was carrying my don’t-think-about-being-alone-stop-jumping newborn. My two year old came up to me and said, “Up, Mommy! Please!” If I wasn’t a baby carrier mama, I would never have been able to hold and rock my “high needs” newborn (on my back) while still getting the cuddle time I needed with my toddler. Yes, I wore both, but that’s a topic for another article!
