6 Helpful Ways To Manage Your Child’s Mini Tantrums

Does this sound familiar? My client wrote to me with the following question:

“My 4-year-old daughter seems to fly off the handle and get angry for no reason. This morning, for example, she woke up cheerfully, got dressed, brushed her teeth and washed up without a problem. At breakfast, out of nowhere, she starts yelling at her brother not to look at her. My son he told her to just close her eyes and not look at him. This made her even angrier and she sat under the table crying and whining for about 5 minutes. she came out from under the table and ate her breakfast like nothing happened. This always happens .He’s sweet, cuddly, warm, then he explodes without warning, then he’s calm again. What’s happening and how can I stop him from behaving like this?”

Does this ever happen to you?

Here are 6 ways to deal with your child’s mini tantrums:

1. Look for patterns in behavior:

Some children are temperamental and we don’t know what sets them off. I would still try to find a pattern to his behavior. Do you behave this way more often when you wake up, when you go to school, when you are rushing, at night, or when you are dealing with other children? Finding the source can help treat or eliminate the cause of your mini tantrums. You’re less likely to get caught by accident and you’ll be better prepared to deal with them.

For example, if you know that mornings are a difficult time for him, you can ask him to eat in front of all his siblings or move the seats so that they sit far apart.

Learning to work around the hardest times will help ease the tension you’re both experiencing.

2. You can only control your behavior:

It is helpful to remember that it is normal for all children to whine, cry, throw tantrums, and be angry with their siblings. We cannot completely stop this kind of behavior. Getting along with others in your family is a lifelong endeavor. Everyone, including adults, whines, cries, sulks, and misbehaves. It’s just a part of life. Dealing with our family’s bad moods, including our own, is only part of the job description under the title of Mother. Don’t fight it. Your reaction will set the stage for how your child will manage their moods and conflicts later in life. In other words, focus more on how you respond to him to model the right behavior instead of trying to change his behavior. Instead of saying to yourself, “I need to get him to stop behaving like this, he’s always behaving badly.” Say, “He needs help dealing with his harsh feelings. If I can find a way to deal with this annoying behavior in a kind way, he will learn to be kind to others and learn how to control himself better in the future.” A wise man once told me, “You can’t change people’s behavior, but you can control how you react to them.” This is the secret to great parenting.

3. Find him a safe place:

If it drives you crazy, you have the right to say:

“If you need to whine, cry or complain, find another place to do it.”
“Do you want me to take you up to your room to finish crying, or do you want to go yourself?”
“Which private place do you want to go to finish whining, the bedroom or the bathroom?”

4. Empathy, empathy, empathy:

When children hear empathy, it comforts them and helps them deal with difficult feelings.
You can say:

“Something makes you so sad and whiny, I wish I knew what it is. You can’t seem to tell me now.”

“Sometimes having someone look at you can bother you. It can make you want to sit under the table while you compose yourself. It can upset you even if the person looking at you didn’t mean to hurt or bother you. you.”

5. Help him take responsibility for his behavior:

When you are calm and he is calm, talk to him. Encourage him to think about ways to improve his behavior. Here are some suggestions:

“You know this morning you were really upset about Jonny looking at you and complaining and whining about it. Can you think of any other way you could have reacted? Is there anything I can do next time to help you deal with a situation like ?”

“When you feel all squeamish inside, is there a way to get your bad feelings out without whining or complaining? Sometimes the noise you make when you’re sad or angry can hurt my ears and I’ll whine!”

He may not respond or he may not be able to come up with any solution. The point of solving this problem at such a young age is to plant the seeds in his mind that he is responsible for his own behavior. You’re sending him the message, “You can justify your behavior, and as a parent, I’m willing to help.”

6. Parenting with a half-full mentality:

Another trick for effective parenting is to focus on the positive behavior your child is exhibiting. In this particular case, I would venture that the fact that you can calm yourself down after about 5 minutes is a big plus. It sounds like he doesn’t get angry and doesn’t show negative behavior for long periods of time. You can praise him for that.

“You know sometimes you’re upset or angry. You might yell and complain, but you know how to calm down. Once you calm down, you’ll be happy again. That’s a very good way.”

You can also notice and praise him when his siblings bother him and don’t upset him.

“Jonny wanted the toy you were playing with, you gave it to him and found another toy to play with. That’s called being nice.”

Mini tantrums can be just as exhausting as big ones. The tactics mentioned above can help provide some relief and help your child get through difficult moods more easily.

I hope this helped.
Good luck,
Adina
