When You Simply Can’t Stay Away From a CPAP Machine – The Risk Factors of Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea is a disorder characterized by interruptions in breathing during sleep. Basically, when this is the case, you – in a sense – forget to breathe.
The causes of the types of sleep apnea are clearly structural in nature. This means that an abnormality in one part of the body is causing the condition. In obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the muscles in the throat collapse (and the dilated muscles are unable to keep the airway clear) causing breathlessness. Central sleep apnea is caused by a misfire in the brain. Simply put, the central nervous system forgets to tell you to breathe.
The standard approach to treating sleep apnea – in Toronto and elsewhere – is to use a CPAP machine. This creates a special pressure in the airways to prevent the muscles from collapsing. This pressure is called continuous positive airway pressure, or CPAP for short.
How can you prevent sleep apnea? You can ask. Well, there are a number of prevention strategies listed, but since this type of condition is largely structural, efforts must be redoubled to truly stay away from the CPAP machine.
There are many risk factors associated with it. This means that you are more at risk of developing this condition if you meet any of the following conditions:
the. You are a man.
Studies have shown that sleep apnea is more common in men than women. Statistics in the United States show that 4% of men, but only 2% of women, have symptoms of OSA. From this it can be concluded (albeit loosely) that men need the CPAP machine more. They would even need replacement CPAP parts – in Toronto or elsewhere – more.
b. You are between 40 and 60 years old.
It is more common among people between the ages of 40 and 60. However, this does not exclude the fact that it also occurs in children and infants. So it is not certain that we can say that people under 40 will never need a CPAP machine.
c. You are obese.
If you’re obese, you’re more likely to develop sleep apnea—and need a CPAP machine as a result. This is especially true if fatty tissues are deposited around the abdomen.
d. It has the following physical characteristics: including a large neck, narrow upper jaw, receding chin or larger tongue. All these “structural abnormalities” disrupt the natural flow of air and the normal functioning of the airways.
However, remember that risk factors are not causes. For example, a large neck does not necessarily cause sleep apnea. You can’t point to an overweight male and tell him that his size significantly disrupts his sleep. You can’t tell a 60-year-old man that it’s because of his age.
Risk factors merely show a correlation—a relationship between two factors. Risk factors only increase a person’s chances of getting the condition. No more, no less.
