World Cup Trivia
The 2010 FIFA World Cup will be a ball! Every year, the best football teams from around the world compete in the world’s biggest sporting event. This year the tournament will be held in South Africa from June 11 to July 11. Here are some fascinating facts about this and last year’s tournament:
1. The official mascot of the 2010 World Cup is called Zakumi.
Zakumi is a humanized leopard with green hair. The name is a combination of the international abbreviation for South Africa (ZA) and the word “rubber”. In several African languages, the word “gum” is translated into English as the number ten. The colors of the mascot, yellow and green, are also in the center of the South African flag. Zakum’s birthday falls on South Africa’s red letter day: Youth Day. Additionally, Zakum’s date of birth (1994) marks South Africa’s first non-racial national election.
2. Only two world championships have been held outside America and Europe.
The exceptions were in 2002 (South Korea/Japan) and in 2010 (South Africa).
3. Europe and South America have dominated the event.
In fact, European countries have won the tournament nine times, while South American countries have won it a total of nine times. Interestingly, a European country has never become world champion in a game played outside of Europe. Unless you’ve been living under a rock your whole life, you probably know that Brazil is one of the world’s soccer powerhouses. So it is not surprising that the country has won a record five world championships. But Italy is behind with four championships of their own. Germany (West) is next, with a total of three world championships. Meanwhile, Uruguay and Argentina both have a pair of championships. And finally, England and France have each won the tournament once.
4. The youngest and oldest player was 17 years old and the oldest was 42 years old.
The youngest World Cup player was Norman Whiteside (Ireland), who was just 17 years/41 days old when he played in 1982. Meanwhile, Roger Milla (Cameroon) was 42 years/39 days old when he took the bid in 1994.
5. The all-time best World Cup goalscorer was French.
In 1958, France’s Just Fontaine scored a whopping 13 points during the tournament, averaging just over two points per game. The second top scorer of all time was Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis. Hungry for goals, he scored a total of 11 points in five games during the 1954 tournament. And the third all-time top scorer was West Germany’s Gerd Muller. In 1970, he scored 10 points in six games.
6. Two players have scored in four consecutive World Cup finals.
Interestingly, both players scored during the same World Cup. Pele (Brazil) and Uwe Seeler (West Germany) both scored in the final in 1958, 1962, 1966 and 1970.
As always, the 2010 tournament will be an exciting event. In addition to watching the heart-pounding action on the football field, keep an eye on the record books to see if any records have been broken.
