Now That YOUR Website Is Up, What Do You Do Next?
I visited the “Getting Nigerian Businesses Online” (GNBO) 5-day venue (Grandeur Events Center at Billings way, Oregun) on the 2nd day – Tuesday, November 1, 2011 – and was intrigued by the participation of Nigerian business owners. advantage of the offer: Everyone loves free gifts!
Due to other commitments, I wasn’t going to stay long. I quickly inquired about the steps involved in setting up the promised FREE websites (so that I could pass the information on to others who were interested) and learned that the only fee required was to register a domain name. It made sense because Google hosting is FREE. The customized system used by service providers is based on Google’s FREE guided SITE BUILDER user interface.
Before I left, I started a conversation with one of the outgoing CEOs after his site was set up. During our conversation I asked, “Now that you have your website ready, what next?…What do you say on it?…How are you going to advertise it?…Are you going to put ads on TV, radio, in magazines, or on Facebook, Google?“
You need a carefully crafted plan for your Internet presence!
Guess what? He thought I “blew the grammar!” Needless to say, our conversation didn’t last long. Hmm, everyone does NOT see the opportunity. Some people just do what other people do.
I started building websites for FREE for clients over 3 years ago because I understood this often overlooked but crucial point. Many potential clients often asked me in amazement “But why are you building for free? So how do you make money?“
I have always emphasized that the advancements in web technology now allow ANYONE, even 5 year olds, to build dynamic/database driven websites in a few clicks and with NO technical knowledge whatsoever. An example is Joomla! – Powerful open source content management system used by millions to build websites. So, what I do is get clients to pay me to write content copy and develop custom automated online marketing systems.
Unfortunately, many of the web pros here didn’t “get it” and suggested I build the sites for FREE because my design skills were poor. With this Google sponsored FREE GNBO offer (advertised on TV, radio, print media and online) to millions in their target market of Nigeria, I’m sure few short sighted developers are having nightmares right now. Many GNBO beneficiaries are now potential network marketing clients that I can approach!
In order to make money, you need to make sales. Building a website is just the FIRST step in the process. You should focus on making your website your potential customers. If you don’t have a plan to make it happen (a plan that should ideally influence the construction/design of the place itself), your website becomes a PUMP for your money. Season.
Now that your site is ready, I suggest you complete (at least) the steps below
These are the basic parts of the plan that I recommend. You can learn about other components by reading other articles I’ve written about business marketing.
1. Your Website Content: This should ideally happen during installation. But it’s never too late. The content of your website must be responsive, i.e. attractive enough for some visitors to contact you or respond to your offers. Rate your content. If you can’t do it yourself, hire a qualified expert to give you a CONTENT CRITIQUE. He can help you rewrite it if necessary. If you need help, call me.
2. Your mailing list: You MUST generate sales leads that you can follow up on. If set up correctly, your website will periodically GET the contact information of POTENTIAL customers to your website’s mailing list. There are plenty of mailing list software with login forms. Many hosting providers offer one-click installation of these tools. Offer free offers on your site to entice visitors to leave their name, email address, phone number, etc. Over time, you can MIVO this information to get financially rewarding responses.
3. Follow-up: 2 ideas immediately come to mind. Start a brand website newsletter and article marketing campaign. Use your mailing list software to send messages at reasonable intervals to subscribers – smartly include product/service offers and announcements in these mailings every now and then. Stick with it long enough and you’ll notice MORE subscribers and opportunities to close sales.

“Where everyone thinks alike, no one thinks anything” – Anon
Sometimes it’s just NOT wise to follow the majority.
If there is anyone who KNOWS the importance of difference and used it to GET FORWARD, to benefit himself and MILLIONS of people worldwide, it is SIR RICHARD BRANSON. Here’s what he recently had to say about ANOTHER person who CHANGED the world by THINKING DIFFERENTLY…
————— Starts————–
“Sometimes pursuing your vision means that you have to ignore the warnings and even ridicule of others… When you are pursuing your own entrepreneurial vision, feel free to consider if building a company involves obstacles and ignoring critics.
Pursue your passion; admit when you encounter something you’re not good at and either delegate it or find a way around it (even Jobs hired great professionals to run public relations, and he formed alliances with Apple’s rivals IBM and Microsoft); and when things go wrong, pick yourself up and keep going. This is an adventure that requires courage and conviction.
Throughout his life, Jobs encouraged everyone he worked with to “think differently.” It’s advice I’ve taken to heart. He meant entrepreneurs; he meant you…”
Richard Branson (Branson on Sunday), “Steve Jobs, the entrepreneur who thought differently.” Sunday Punch, 30 October 2011
