A Life Of Anxiety And The World Around You
Alright, so if you’re reading this right now, you’re either:
1) The title is very interesting
2) you have an anxiety disorder and you will read more information about anxiety (as if you are not already an expert)
The truth is, if you’re in group #2, firstly I want to say welcome and secondly, I want to say that it wasn’t too long ago that I was in the same anxious shoes as you. My health concerns took me to places I never thought I would go. Places like church to “find god” because the doctor sure didn’t help me with my panic attacks and anxiety, Bali where I moved my newly crowned bride and 1 year old so I could have a “fresh start” and maybe shake this feeling of helplessness I had, and finally at every damn emergency room in the city of Calgary where I would spend almost as much time as a part-time employee due to the fear of death my anxiety symptoms gave me.
No one is saying that NOBODY wore a “fake mask” in public like I did, I had actually become an expert at it. A “good morning” to my coworkers at the tennis facility where I taught, a “good” response there when asked how my day was, as I fearfully hopped onto the stationary bike at the local gym. the heart might explode.
I was so good at faking it that I could easily teach hundreds of people how to convince large audiences that your life was as normal and happy as anyone else’s.
But the truth was I was fighting my demons, my skeletons, whatever you want to call it every second (no lie) of every day. My recovery from anxiety disorder wasn’t a straight road either, and you want to know why? Here’s why, and I might blow your mind with this, but here it goes… Because the health care “professionals” I went to didn’t want me to recover from my anxiety disorder.
It must have struck a nerve with you, but before you start blasting me with emails and spreading the word about how bad of a man I am, remember that I’m the one who recovered naturally from anxiety disorder, and now I am. Find out what works and what doesn’t as you continue to search high and low for answers (truth again). Answers to the new anxiety symptoms that came up last night, answers to how to retrain yourself to be the social butterfly you used to be again, and on and on.
Yep, the worst thing you can do is put your anxiety disorder in the hands of a “professional”, why? Because they DON’T WANT YOU TO GET HEALED (sorry caps). Why don’t they want you to get better? Well, the short answer is because if you get better, they won’t see you again, and that can not only hurt their reputation, but their wallet as well (remember, that’s the short answer). God forbid they find out you did your own research and found the chemical imbalance theory to be complete bullshit and you had to flush all your meds.
I get asked for anxiety advice every single day, like how do I stop panic attacks? How to stop worrying about my anxiety symptoms and get my life back. After overcoming debilitating anxiety disorders naturally, becoming a well-known CBT trainer in my area, and successfully helping many people end their anxiety (as well as their daily check-ups at the local outlet to see if the EKG test shows anything, it’s always going to be the same, so you know), I decided to take matters into my own hands and fill the people with the truth to end their distress, Do you want to hear the truth? Of course you do, and it comes in a few simple and somewhat harsh ways, which are:
– Find a mentor who has been in your position and ended their anxiety battle naturally
– Come up with a plan, and if you don’t have a plan or struggle to make one, eventually invest in an anxiety program and stop doing random things
– Contribute mentally, physically and emotionally for a certain period of time (yes longer than you think)
– Stop seeing health professionals and even therapists with whom you have no connection
– Don’t talk about your anxiety
– Stop feeling helpless and hopeless every day because what ‘they’ say is actually true; you can turn what you think is impossible today into possible tomorrow (tomorrow, as in future, you know). Eventually…
– Smile at your fear and anxiety instead of running away from it
Yes, you read that last one right and you know where it came from? Movie Gladiator! You know you’ve seen it a million times, just like me! Remember that passage when Marcos Aurelius says to the emperor; “Death smiles on us all, a man can’t help but smile back” I picked up the words from that movie and used it as a tool to de-emotionalize my fears. Every time I felt a panic spiral begin in me and the “what if” thoughts creep in, I would repeat those words over and over in my head and with it came a slow but sure relief from my anxiety. Simply because I conditioned myself not to be afraid anymore, but to smile in the face of my greatest fear… Let me tell you what a rush it was.
