An Overview of the Most Common Old Dog Diseases
When talking about old dog diseases, it’s always good to ask, “What is an old dog, exactly?” After all, some diseases are much more commonly known as old dog diseases than others.
Depending on the breed, the meaning of the word “old” can vary, but it usually starts around 10 years of age. As the dog ages, its behavior also changes. The signs of aging in dogs are very similar to those seen in humans. For example, old dogs have a reduced energy level. They sleep longer, have less enthusiasm for energetic activities, and just don’t play as much as they used to. Older dogs also experience changes in their fur and skin (the fur gets matted more often, wounds take longer to heal, and old dogs tend to be more sensitive to extreme temperatures). And of course, older dogs experience changes in their vision and hearing, which sometimes makes it difficult to move around the house.
Now there are other, more serious diseases that old dogs are prone to. These include cancer, arthritis, gastrointestinal diseases and diabetes. Let’s look at each in more detail.
Cancer is a tragic disease that can spread surprisingly quickly in both people and pets. Symptoms include abnormal growths under the skin and swellings that do not go away. Cancer can also manifest as bleeding or a bloody discharge (from the eyes, mouth, ears or any other opening). This, combined with difficulty eating, breathing, urinating or pooping, can be symptoms of cancer in old dogs.
Another common disease is arthritis. Although not as life-threatening as cancer, arthritis can be a debilitating disease in older dogs that takes much of your pet’s life. Symptoms include difficulty getting up, stiffness, irritability or loneliness. You may also notice that your old dog’s muscles atrophy as his activity level decreases.
Kidney disease is also common in old dogs. If you notice increased thirst, urination and weight loss, your dog may be suffering from kidney failure. Vomiting and blood in the urine or poo are serious symptoms and if you notice them, contact your vet immediately. Of course, these symptoms can be caused by one of many old dog diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease or bladder stones. Again, get to the vet right away.
Diabetes is common in humans, but it is also common in dogs. You may notice increased thirst and urination, weight loss, weakness, and increased lethargy and depression in a diabetic dog. If left untreated, diabetes can be fatal. There is no cure for canine diabetes, but it can be managed with insulin injections.
Finally, cataract are also common in older dogs. The eyes become cloudy, the dog cannot move around objects and stops fetching objects. However, be aware that all old dogs have gray eyes due to hardening of the lens. Usually, this does not affect the old dog’s ability to see. However, cataracts are a more serious condition that can eventually lead to vision loss. As in humans, cataracts in dogs can be treated with surgery
An old dog normally suffers some loss of energy and mobility, just like an elderly person. Helping Kuver cope as he ages means that he is treated with extra patience and kindness. Give him more time to sleep and more time to wake up in the morning. Realize that long walks don’t have to be that long
any more. Make it easier for him to get to his food, get outside when nature calls, and provide comfortable places to rest.
And keep an eye out for signs of older dog diseases, such as cancer and diabetes, to which your pet may be more susceptible. Your dog will live longer and give you more years of loving companionship.
