Review – ‘A Day’s Wait’ by Ernest Hemingway
Waiting for the Day is an excellent story written by ‘Ernest Hemingway’. This simple story revolves around a nine-year-old child named “Schatz”, his father and his doctor. The story perfectly describes the feelings of fear in the mind of an innocent nine-year-old child. The timeline of the entire story is one hour, during which Schatz finds out about his high fever, is horrified and believes that he will die due to a false impression.
The story begins with Schatz entering his father’s room at 9:00 a.m. looking very ill. There is ice around the earth. Schatz has fear all over his face, which worries his father. His father calls the doctor for a complete examination of the boy. The whole trauma begins when the doctor announces that Schatz has a high fever, over 102 degrees.
Schatz is confused and scared after hearing this. He immediately remembers what he heard from the boys in France that a temperature of around 40 degrees is certain death. Even though she is only nine years old and has little idea how to read a thermometer, she is afraid of this. When his father explains to him the readings of the thermometer and assures him that high temperatures do not cause death, his worries subside and he feels relieved and relaxed.
The doctor also plays an important role in the story. He deduces the symptoms of a high fever in Schatz and diagnoses the symptoms of influenza. After that, he prescribes the appropriate medicines for the child.
At one point, Schatz’s fear of certain death causes him to lock himself in his room while his father has gone hunting. He refuses to let anyone into his room. The people in the neighborhood try to get him to understand the reading of the truth thermometer, but he was so shocked and convinced of his death that he rejects any intervention.
The story is beautifully written in a way that gives Schatz both a positive and a negative role. He is a determined child with a strong will. Schatz sends an important message in this story: “Don’t believe everything you hear.” One should not blindly believe everything that is told to him, but must examine the situation himself.
The story finally ends when the little innocent mind realizes that his fever won’t kill him if he takes the proper medicine and takes care of himself.
