Adopting a Reborn Doll – The Good, The Bad and the Ugly!

So Are you going to buy one of these amazing dolls?

Buying a reborn doll is based more on feeling than on the senses – the heart rules the head. The props and sets used in the photos are designed to take you in this direction. Baby powder, soft toys, lace and fur are meant to make the doll look (either sound asleep or tempting you with wide eyes) so irresistible that you want to pick it up and never put it down.

When you see the reborn doll you love, you feel like you really need it. Its image advertising at its best. Just as “Coke” connotes youth and fun, the powerful newborn baby photos evoke the same emotions as Johnson’s best baby powder commercials – the promise of unconditional love and warm hugs.

Some people have said they were so devastated when they lost a newborn baby on eBay that their hearts sank, they cried for days.

But I warn you, if the baby arrives and it is not what you expected, this will also be a big disappointment and your wallet will be lighter. So it’s wise to use your head a bit before buying.

Reborns are everywhere and there are lots of them on eBay (a real mixed bag – some are downright scary). There are many doll forums, and one of them has a section called “Does she sell this?” which celebrates some of the badass reborn puppetry on the market.

Should price be the best indicator? What about guild membership and rewards? How can you know? So what are you looking for and what separates a good doll from a bad one?

Price

Price is not the best indicator – high prices do not guarantee quality and there are some excellent ones that are reasonably priced. The big prices (several thousand dollars) are dominated by a handful of reborn artists.

Awards

Be careful with guilds and memberships – most don’t require proof of talent or customer service. Watch out for prizes – sometimes they are the only ones in the race.

Product inspection

I think nothing beats seeing a doll before you buy it, but this is not often an option as this is truly electronic and international (a borderless industry).

If you can’t see the real thing, photos are the next best thing. But beware of photos – there are all kinds of electronic filters and artificial light that can make them look better than they are. You should be happy when the reborn arrives and think the photos didn’t do them justice at all. Ask the artist about the enhancements and lighting used in their images.

Then look at the artist’s reputation (and remember that talent as an artist, honesty, and customer service can all be mutually exclusive). Satisfaction guarantees, damage repair practices should be understood, and they are indicators of good customer service. EBay feedback is a testament to honesty and customer service. The talent is up to you as the judge.

My strong suggestion would be to look on the internet or join a forum or two and find the artist there. Beware of listings of reborn nurseries on the site – they do not guarantee quality or honesty. Most artists present their work and have it signed on forums.

Here are some recommendations on what to look for when looking at dolls in person or in pictures:

1. Rate how much the doll really looks like a baby. A good reborn should be mistaken for a baby.

My daughter has taken her reborn shopping with us and of course she (6 years old) gets tired of carrying them so I have to carry them. I am left in a difficult position. Do I nurse this baby as it is and people think I’m a nut for nursing dolls OR do I just carry him around like he’s my daughter’s doll that I now have to carry around?

For a good rebirth, you have no choice but the first option. I once had to endure the stares of many people in a large mall who stared at me like I was a careless parent. I have found that it is not publicly acceptable to drop a baby (and therefore a reborn doll) at the bottom of a shopping cart. It is also not acceptable to hold the baby comfortably between your elbow and hand with the limbs dangling, even if your hand comfortably supports the head. Also, in general, people will be quite critical of you (and give you nasty looks) if they think the baby should be wrapped a little warmer.

2. Look at the details – hands and feet (look at nail details), ears (how real they look – sculptural detail can sometimes be limiting – more expensive sculpts have more detail), eyebrows (should look real) and creases and folds should not look like cutouts.

3. The artists work hard to achieve realistic skin tones and this should make the baby look like a subtle mottled (look for this – it’s a sign of quality).

4. Rooting of mohair. The hair should be shiny and soft and rooted so that it is not at all “clumpy”. The root should be directed – i.e. at a different angle, so that it sits nicely over the entire head. Some artists do great work with their directional roots with crown/ crowns, parts, etc. Look for this – it’s a sign of quality.

Personal preference

Some people like their dolls to look very real, with milk spots, rashes and scratches. If you don’t like these, don’t buy a reborn baby with them. Its personal taste. I personally don’t like these. I know they are realistic, but when my real babies had rashes, I couldn’t wait for them to go away. So I’m of the opinion that I wouldn’t want them on the doll permanently.

Some people like sculptures with funny wrinkled faces. Well, I say good for them – to each their own. I love beautiful babies (although I see beauty in the slightly funny faces of newborns) and I try to achieve this mixed with realism in my sculptural choices and painting.

Good luck finding a doll you love.
