World Cup 2006 Preview – Spain
Straight odds: 14/1
Group H winners: 4/6
Spain are once again considered the dark horses of the World Cup, and 2006 will finally end years of disappointment and this generation of players will realize their undeniable potential. But they don’t. For all their individual talent, they can never motivate themselves to rise to the challenge.
They are, of course, World Cup mainstays, and 2006 is their eight tournament in a row that they have reached since 1978. The quarter-finals are as far as they’ve gone since then, so why the obsession that this is going to be “their year”?
Spain survived in the playoffs, finishing second in their group behind Serbia and Montenegro. Luis Aragones’ side were unbeaten in 10 qualifying matches, but five draws and five wins meant they had to face Slovakia to secure their place in Germany. It was all over after the first leg as Spain ran out 5-1 winners before drawing 1-1 in the second leg and winning 6-2 on aggregate.
Perhaps the reason for such optimism lies in the leader. Under Aragones, Spain are unbeaten in 18 games since he took over in July 2004, although the players must also take credit.
Spain has found a real striker in Fernando Torres. The 21-year-old Atletico Madrid striker was the fourth top scorer in the European qualifying region with seven goals and is a target for both Arsenal and Chelsea. Torres is seen as the natural successor to Raul, Spain’s most capped outfield player and all-time top goalscorer.
At 28, Raul should be in his prime for the finals, but a cruciate ligament injury suffered in November raises questions about how influential he will be. Another excuse for a potentially underwhelming tournament?
The September qualifier against Serbia and Montenegro set a new record as it was the first time that a foreign club, Liverpool, had more representatives in the national team than any Spanish club team. Will the likes of Jose Reina, Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia translate their excellent club performances onto the big stage? With five goals in seven World Cup appearances, Fernando Morientes is a threat, although his domestic form has been a bit lackluster.
Recommended bet
The notorious underdogs face a tough opener in Ukraine and will need to hit the ground running in their remaining two games, which they are expected to win outright. The opener will also be Ukraine’s first World Cup game and with both sides looking to avoid defeat, a draw is the likely outcome.
Spain-Ukraine draw @11/5
