What Age Should Your Golden Retriever Puppy Be When You Get It?
A golden retriever puppy is a beautiful, almost irresistible object. The soft fluffy belly, those sad “take-me-home-with-you” eyes, the rich coat…when one is in front of you, you can’t help but grab it and take it home with you right away.
However, there are reasons why it would make sense to wait before taking a retriever puppy home. Golden retriever puppies, like all young animals, need time with their mother to grow and mature before they can be separated. If a puppy is taken from its mother too young, it can have devastating consequences. A Golden Retriever puppy must be at least 3 months old before you buy it from a breeder and take it home, and there are several reasons for this:
HEALTH
Retriever puppies are very vulnerable creatures and they need their mother’s milk to grow up healthy and strong. Mother’s milk contains antibodies that the puppy uses to fight bacteria while its own immune system is still forming. Also, a very young puppy is still immune to vaccination shots, so if it encounters some type of bacteria or virus, it will likely succumb to it. On the other hand, a 3-month-old puppy has built up its immune system, and by then should have received all vaccinations, giving it a better chance of survival.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
Golden retriever puppies learn growing up with their mother and siblings if they have any. They learn proper behavior for dogs and what it’s like to live in a family unit. Studies have shown that golden retrievers who are taken away from their mothers before 3 months of age often become shy or fearful because they do not know how to interact with other animals or people. On the other hand, puppies that have had enough time to learn, play and grow with their mothers and siblings usually become friendly and calm adults.
3-month-old golden retrievers not only have a greater health and mental advantage than younger puppies that have already been separated from their mothers, but are also larger and more active. They are also easier to feed because at this age they can already eat solid food as long as you soften it in hot water before feeding. Younger puppies still need milk to grow and develop, and often you need to buy formula for your puppy. Before you go shopping for a Golden Retriever puppy, make sure you know the average size and weight of a 3-month-old puppy. They weigh about 18 to 25 pounds and stand about 4 to 6 inches off the ground. Healthy and very social puppies at this age are very curious, playful and friendly. Their eyes should be clear and bright, their skin free of scratches, rashes and parasites, and their teeth, ears and paws should be clean. These are the qualities you should look for when buying a golden retriever puppy. If it owns them, chances are the puppy is at the perfect age to take home!
