Some call them romance scammers. What I call them cannot be printed here. Here are 12 warning signs that should scream at you to run the other way.

I met my first cheater, I filed a report. I also started noticing patterns more and more. Over the course of four months, I collected stacks of printouts and thought the evidence might be useful to the authorities. After holding on to the evidence for over a year, I am convinced of only one thing. Even the so-called cyber crime departments of our favorite law enforcement agencies don’t really care enough to fight these criminals. So, as I prepare to throw all these files into the trash can outside my building, I’d like to make one last effort to do something useful with what I’ve learned about scammers. I hope this helps at least some to avoid being caught by unscrupulous criminals who try to pray for people looking for love.

Being a man who had been looking for a woman, these are aimed in that direction. But ladies, with a little imagination you can definitely see how a scammer might try to use the same tricks against a woman looking for a man. Here they are:

1.- You will find a profile of a beautiful 26-year-old woman who is looking for a 25-99-year-old man.

2.- Under hobbies or interests, they list things like cleaning the house, cooking and doing things for their husband. In one profile I saw, the scammer actually wrote, “My dream is to make a man happy.”

3.- They check everything so that there is virtually no one who does not have something in common with them.

4.- You come across profiles of “different” women who have written the same thing word for word, or you see the same picture posted on more than one profile with different names.

5.- They seem to be confused about gender, even their own.

6.- You receive an email, but by the time you read it, the sender’s profile has been deleted, so the email address included in the message is the only way to contact them.

7.- They try to get you off the dating site as quickly as possible and offer their personal email instead. (The kind that anyone can get in five minutes, fairly anonymously, from anywhere.)

8.- Sudden changes of name and location after the first contact. Example: You are contacted by “Susan”, who lives within 55 miles of you, and she gives you her personal email address. You contact her, and then she tells you, “My real name is Svetlana, I’m in Russia, and I’m moving to your country in 3 weeks.”

9.- They fall in love with you too quickly. We’re talking 5-7 emails and they have no doubt that you are the only man in the world who could ever make them happy.

10.- They sneak in their emails and call you by the wrong name because they profess their undying love for you.

11.- Their first email to you vaguely hints that they are the heir to a large fortune left to them by their father, murdered in cold blood by his business partners.

12.- They write things that can’t make any sense, like saying they liked your picture, even though you don’t have one.
