4 Tips for Choosing the Right Triathlon Running Shoe

When I first started training for triathlons, I had no idea the amount of equipment needed or the specifics. Of course I knew I needed a bike, running shoes and clothes, but I had no idea about watches, cycling shoes, aero helmets, aero bikes, wetsuits or countless other things. In fact, my first pair of running shoes were simply ones I bought cheaply at a local sports store. I just had no idea.

When I started getting more serious about my racing and running, I knew I had to buy shoes that would allow me to perform at my best. Once again I was unsure where to turn to begin this process. I looked online and looked for different products for running shoes. I found a lot of information especially about running marathons or distance races. I couldn’t find much information about specific triathlon shoe ideas. I took some ideas from the information I found and started the shoe shopping process.

Along the way, I have found several different ideas for choosing shoes that I would like to share in this post.

  1. Get Fit – No, this is not an unnecessary idea of improving your physical condition, but rather getting fit according to the type of shoes you need. Most running specialty stores will help you find the best shoe for you. Many of these stores will take you through a series of tests to determine which shoe fits you best. After doing this a few times, the process goes something like this. First, the sales representative will talk to you a bit about what you do for running, how long you’ve been running and what your running goals are. I’m looking for and asking someone who has been around for a while to get the best possible conversation about my needs as a runner, especially as I focus on triathlon specific running. Second, they determine the size and width of your foot, either electronically, using a special pad you stand on, or manually, using an old metal platform that’s always cold. Third, they head to the back to bring you a model shoe to practice on. I always know the seller will pick a shoe they like, so I’m mean to stick with the first one. shoe. The example shoe is a neutral shoe with no lift or help to keep your foot straight. Fourth, the sales rep tells you to get on the treadmill and run for 5-10 minutes while they record your feet dropping. You want to wear something you can run in comfortably. On the last such session, the gentleman also recorded me from the side to make sure I landed correctly. After you finish this short running session, a sales representative will watch the video with you. He looks for supination, which is the opposite of pronation and refers to the outward turning of the foot during normal motion. If you have too much supination, you need to have a shoe that helps balance your feet. I have a pretty neutral drop on my feet so this hasn’t been a problem for me. At one of the places I’ve been, they made me stand on a glass screen that measured the pressure points on my foot. This helped to understand the arch level of the foot. Once all of this information is gathered, a sales representative will select a shoe for you to try on. This reconciliation process is very important.
  2. Get Optional – You need to take the time to choose your shoes based on the information provided to you by the sales representative. I have noticed that choosing the look and feel of the shoe is very important. If you don’t like the look of the shoe, you’ll feel less than excited to wear it, even for running. If you don’t like the feeling, you don’t run. This choice is critical. You might be a little picky about shoe brand, but for me, I want something that will give me support and comfort for many miles. Most sneakers last 300-500 miles, so choose wisely which shoe you wear with. Often in the store you can run on a treadmill or mini track inside the store, some even let you go outside to run in your shoes. Allow enough time to where you’re sure these are the shoes you’ll be wearing for your training and racing.
  3. Get more – Yes, get more than one pair. I usually find the right shoe at the store. I really don’t want someone to spend 30 minutes to an hour helping me find a shoe and then go home and buy it online. It is not genuine and a terrible practice. However, I go home and start looking at other couples. You want to alternate shoes. When I started spinning shoes, I bought 3 of the same type of shoes. Two of them I switched back and forth on training days, then the third was for the competition. This process worked pretty well, but I’ve since been told that you should have 2-3 pairs of shoes that are different during training. They can have a different amount of cushion or a different amount of fall. Shoe drop is the amount of drop from heel to toe. The drop can be anything from 0 to 10mm or more. I’m trying to get 3 different drops on my shoes now. The theory is that you use different leg, calf and calf muscles with different amounts of drop. Therefore, if you use different types, you will get a stronger overall performance. Then you want to choose a shoe for racing. If you’re running a sprint race, you might want to buy a shoe that doesn’t have a lot of cushioning and is therefore lighter for running. If you’re running a longer race than you want more padding for longer distances. Much of this race shoe selection process is through trial and error.
  4. Get the fit – The last tip for getting the right triathlon shoe is to get the fit right. What I mean by this is that during transitions, you don’t have much time to tie your shoes or drop it. You want to make quick work of getting your running shoes on for the running portion of the race. I prefer to use elastic shoelaces for this process. I buy my shoelaces online. After that, I change the shoelaces and hair the elastics. Next, I put the shoe on with very loose shoelaces. From now on, I tighten the shoe laces around the foot already in the shoe. If you do this before you get your foot in the shoe, certain parts of the shoe will be too tight. I then make the necessary adjustments to get comfortable with the new elastic laces. I don’t want a squeeze. I’ll go for a run then. I want to track the mileage of the shoes so I know when I can replace them. You want your shoe to fit well but not too tight because you have a lot of miles of training and running.

I hope these tips help you choose a running shoe for triathlons.
