Infant Bronchitis – Everything Parents Need To Know
Parents can sacrifice their whole lives for their children. When their child is unwell, how can they sleep properly?
When a child constantly coughs and has difficulty breathing, you may think that this is no ordinary cough or cold. Check with your pediatrician as your baby may be suffering from bronchitis.
Bronchitis usually occurs in adults. In this disorder, the large airways of our body become inflamed. Bronchitis refers to infants whose airways are inflamed between the chest and lungs. This term is derived from the word bronchioles, a part of the bronchial tubes of infants, which is naturally smaller than that of an adult. Therefore, infections in this case are easily blocked and viruses get in very easily.
When is your child at risk?
1. At the age of 6 months, the baby is exposed to bronchitis. Until the baby is 2 years old, this tendency is just too much.
2. Babies are more susceptible to this disease in winter and early spring.
3. Babies exposed to cigarettes and burping smoke also had a high risk of getting the said disease.
4. For infants, even crowded environments cause symptoms of bronchitis.
5. Male infants have a higher risk of bronchitis than females.
6. Male infants who are formula-fed during the first 6 months are more likely to develop this disease than those who are breast-fed.
What are the causes of bronchitis?
Respiratory Syncytial Virus or RSV is a major cause of bronchitis among infants. Researchers have shown that RSV causes serious ailments in young children, mostly babies.
Other viruses that lead to bronchitis include:
1. Parainfluenza virus
This kind of virus most often causes children’s respiratory infections in babies.
2. Mycoplasma
This type of virus is the decisive cause of pneumonia and several other respiratory diseases.
3. Adenoviruses
This virus usually causes ailments such as conjunctivitis and several other respiratory ailments.
4. Influenza virus
Such a virus enters the respiratory tract of the human body and results in people suffering from colds, coughs and to some extent bronchitis.
What are the symptoms?
1. The baby starts to have a runny and stuffy nose and a mild cough. This is a key symptom of bronchitis among infants.
2. Next, the child would suffer from various breathing difficulties, i.e. both in the inhaling and exhaling part.
3. In just a day or two, the baby would have increased breathing difficulties and rapid wheezing and coughing. By now you must be aware that the heartbeats would have become very abnormally fast.
4. Although all the above symptoms are necessary, they are often accompanied by others such as fever and/or cooler body temperature and loss of appetite.
How can medical professionals diagnose bronchitis?
If you notice the above symptoms in your child, you need to contact a pediatrician as soon as possible. The pediatrician first checks the baby’s medical history and then evaluates the baby with a physical examination. In addition, the doctor prescribes additional examinations, which must be taken very seriously. These tests are as follows:
1. Pulse oximeter
2. Chest X-ray
What treatments are recommended?
1. The child can be temporarily relieved with first aid.
2. Next, you need to give your child plenty of caffeine-free fluids. This controls the child’s dehydration.
3. If you wish, you can use humidifiers and/or saline nasal drops. These would help lighten the mucus very quickly.
4. Sometimes medical experts recommend that parents and/or caregivers bring their children to the hospital so that they receive well-monitored care, such as giving fluids and oxygen when needed and providing proper humidity. One very important thing in this case would be for the child to receive proper medical care.
Is bronchitis preventable?
Once your child has been saved from an attack of bronchitis, you must not put them at risk for another episode of the disease. So you need to take the following preventive measures:
1. Although the baby’s period seasons like winters and early spring, make sure you keep your baby away from people suffering from cough, cold and flu.
2. Make sure that as a parent and/or caregiver, you should wash your hands every time before handling the baby.
3. If you cough or sneeze, you must use a handkerchief or tissue to cover your mouth well enough.
If you are likely to be sick, ask someone to take over for you for a few days.
