How Can You Tell If Hair is Growing Back Properly After Telogen Effluvium (TE)?
I often write about female pattern hair loss and tell my readers that recovery from telogen effluvium (TE, also known as shedding) is all about regrowth. Because even if you lose buckets of hair, if you can grow it back with healthy hair, the volume and appearance of your hair won’t take as much of a hit as if you couldn’t regrow hair or could only regrow sick, baby fine hair.
In response, people often ask me things like “how can I tell if my hair will grow back after TE?” or “How can I tell if you’re growing healthy hair back after shedding?” I will answer these questions in the next article.
Seeing short, stubby growth that dramatically improves the appearance of your hair: My hairdresser used to assure me that a few months after my hair loss, I started seeing small hairs. I imagined this would look like a man’s crew cut mixed with my regular hair. (This was not the case.) I started hunting these little guys every night. At first I couldn’t see anything and I started to get depressed. You need to know that regrowth is very short after TE and since hair grows about 1/2 inch per month, it will take some time before you can see it easily.
But here are a few tricks to help. The first is that you can comb your hair against the hair (gently if you’re still shedding.) Or if you don’t want to comb, tilt your hair/head in the opposite direction and hold it there. Now look at the part line and note all the little hairs coming out.
My favorite way to shine for regrowth is to use dry shampoo. Most dry shampoos are basically baby power in spray form. So before you go to bed (you don’t want to do this before going to work or going out), spray a generous amount of dry shampoo on your part line. It will be white, but the contrast between some of the white hairs makes the regrowth much easier to see. And when you wake up, the white stuff is gone from your hair (and it’s cleaner), so you don’t have to worry about brushing it. This method also saves you from having to deal with your hair so much that it falls out more.
How can I tell if my growth is healthy? What if it’s thin and doesn’t look like normal hair?: I often ask my readers not only to look for regrowth, but also to assess the health of the hair. Many respond, “Huh? How do I do that?” I will tell you. To really evaluate hair, you need to pinch a new, short, re-growing hair. I know you hate doing this. But, it is necessary.
The hair to be removed must be uniform in diameter and the root must be dark in color (not the white root that comes with TE). A dark root indicates that the hair had sunk into the scalp and was properly nourished. Compare the diameter of your short hair to your longer, unshed hair. (In my case, there was a lot of this shedding hair lying around.) Although sometimes the growth starts a little thinner, it should be comparable to longer hair.
Sometimes people describe their regrowth as thin, sickly, cobweb-like, or grave candy. Keep an eye on your hair if this is the case. Because if this continues, you may very well be dealing with miniaturization, which is often the result of androgen, DHT, or blocked follicles. If so, the way to regrow healthy hair is to remove this blockage and these androgens.
