How to Get Your Chickens to Lay More Eggs

If you own chickens, you will agree with me when I say that you can get fresh, high quality eggs almost to your heart’s content. I like to call them containers full of goodness. Needless to say, few foods contain as many nutrients as eggs.

If you know how to raise chickens, they will lay eggs regardless of whether they are fertilized or not. The production of eggs occurs naturally in the hen’s body. However, there are external factors that can reduce their ability to produce eggs. The good thing is that there are a few things you can do to increase the number of eggs your chickens lay.

Here’s how to get your hens to lay more eggs:

1. Reserve comfortable nesting boxes… Equip your chickens with nesting boxes and make them as comfortable as possible. Fill them with hay and put a recess in the middle of the box so that the chickens feel comfortable sitting on them. If your chickens feel they are in a safe place, it goes without saying that they will produce more eggs.

2. Provide warmth… Place a few heat lamps around the nest boxes. Make sure they are on low heat. Also, make sure the boxes are warm to entice the hens to lay eggs. However, providing heat may only be necessary in the cold months.

3. Place the fluorescent lamps in place… The fact that your flock lays many eggs means creativity. Attach fluorescent bulbs to timers and set them to turn off and on for 12 hours at a time. Keep them on during normal daylight hours and keep them off at night.

Place them so that they can distribute the light evenly in the booth. In effect, you have repeated days and nights, and this creates an environment that allows your hens to lay eggs continuously. This tip is especially effective during the cold winter months when it is dark.

4. Collect eggs regularly… Make sure you collect eggs for the coop every morning and make it a routine. Leaving eggs in nesting boxes for long periods of time may make the hen want to hatch, even if they are infertile. This is a process known as brooding that causes the hen to stop laying eggs.

5. Be patient with the chickens… Raising chickens also requires patience. Perhaps the reason your chickens are laying few eggs is because they are not in their prime. Allow the hens at least sixteen to twenty-six weeks before you can realistically expect them to start laying eggs. In fact, they may start laying a little later, but you’d be disappointed if you thought they’d start laying eggs before they were sixteen weeks old.

6. Feed the chickens well… If you feed your hens cheap, usually poor quality food, it can lead to poor or complete egg production. Do you want your chickens to produce more eggs? Enter them correctly. Studies have shown that corn, starchy feeds and oils can reduce egg production. Raising chickens means feeding them food that gives them all the nutrients they need. This not only ensures that they stay healthy, but also increases productivity. Occasionally feed the hens crushed oyster shells to increase calcium intake, which is very important for egg development.

7. Give them plenty of water… You may not know it, but chickens need water constantly to stay healthy and productive. Check the water level at least twice a day and remember to change the water if it is dirty.
