On Resistance and Cats – How Hard Do You Resist Change?

I had to take my elderly cat to the vet. He doesn’t like being there and surprised me by being unusually docile when the assistant weighed him and took his temperature. He remained reasonably good-natured during the long wait at the vet. But when he entered the room, everything changed.

This 15-year-old cat, who has lost all but one tooth and about a third of his body weight, escaped the helper’s clutches and made it to the door. There he fought all attempts to catch him and get him back on the exam table. He hissed. He spat. He hit. He shouted. They heard him on the card! It took two strong people, one in elbow-length protective gloves and the other with a large towel, to catch this sick old man and lift him onto the table. The assistant had to use his whole body to pin him down long enough for the vet to draw blood.

Then it took the two of them four minutes to wrestle him into the carrier so I could take him home. No one was going to tell him what to do!

So what does this have to do with personal transformation in people? I was talking to a coach in a discussion series about people who resist progression. As we talked about customers and resistance, I remembered the image of that cat huddled in the corner, ready to kill anyone who tried to move him. I thought about the customers who were fighting kicking and screaming and what it took to get a little movement.

How fiercely can we fight to maintain the status quo. Even when resistance is futile and efforts are exhausting, we continue to resist change. And how exhausting for anyone trying to help!

The next time you have a great opportunity, try some anger management techniques. Stop and breathe. Before you start spitting, hissing, and lunging at the opportunity, stop and wait for your heart and head to sync up. Get in touch – but initially. Do some research. You still have time to retreat or regroup or do whatever, but think that sometimes it’s better to come out of your corner and fight to get ahead than fight to stay put.
