Review of Niels Lyhne-Jens Peter Jacobsen
Nothing was working in Niels’ life. Not for Lyhnen, his father, whose wife made him feel like “a fish suffocating in hot air,” and not for his mother, Bartholin, who continued to live in her confused world of dreams and fantasy when her marriage ship sank.
Not even the birth of Niels could bring his parents together. Growing up, Niels found his relationship with his mother painful. She rejected his confusing fables of characters whose destinies she had complete control over in a world that actually existed. He preferred his father’s simpler and more practical life.
Then Niels fell in love with Edele Lyhne – a 26-year-old blonde woman with a “violently curved back”. It was this woman that 12-year-old Niels secretly loved and worshiped, leaving his young heart pounding with excitement every time he saw her.
Once again, another revered and divine figure in Niels’ life left him. Edele became seriously ill and died, despite Niels’ disingenuous pleas to God not to “take her from us, because you know how much we love her, you shouldn’t, you shouldn’t.” With Adele’s death, Niels’ faith also died. He saw her death as God’s violence against him. He had always believed in almighty God and trusted that all his prayers were answered.
But after Adele died, he believed that his faith had failed him and that prayer was no protection from grief. He had knelt at God’s feet and walked away with his hope crushed. It was God, in his young mind, who was indifferent and forever directed suffering towards humanity.
The day Edele was buried, she kicked the ground in anger every time the Lord’s name was mentioned. She had a nurse grudge against Him for the rest of her life. Faith was no different to her than her mother’s fairy tales. He felt a feverish joy as he realized that by loving God less he could now love himself more.
Even her friendship with the idealistic Eric, whom she had been in love with since childhood, was not free from failure and shame. In later years, Eric was married to Fennimore, and he missed his friend’s company when his marriage failed. Niels, whose own life was haunted by failure, pain and self-pity, didn’t help the couple’s problems – he was in love with them both.
She began a passionate relationship with Fennimore behind her friend’s back. And a desperate Fennimore, whose married life was like a “bottomless pit of suffering,” forced her for a while. Deception became a way of life for the two lovers: “claps of hands stolen under the covers and kisses at the entrance and behind the doors”. But cunning and cunning did not save this relationship from failure. Fennimore later, when he angrily throws Niels away, feels tainted by the relationship.
He rejected their love as a sin and an affront to inner moral justice. This rejection shocked Niels’ boundless self-confidence and sense of honor. He, perhaps still a prisoner of his mother’s imagination, was amazed by Fennimore’s icy and brutal anger, He believed that he would save a female soul from suffering and raise it to happiness.
The issue of faith and belief is undoubtedly central to the story, patriarchal God in Niels’ eyes, a villain and a terrorist. He sees Him as an evil God who has no ears and no mercy: he who created mankind only to ‘pronounce death upon it’. For Niels, there is no learning from failure or growth from adversity – but an unrelenting rage against a merciless god. This is Peter Jacobsen’s ‘The Divine Tragedy’ and it only has Purgatory.
Niels Lyhne, the central character of the story. has taken up arms against God. because of a childhood tragedy. There is no hope, no inspiration, no abundance, and no joy in his existence. For him, human life is a predictable journey towards “darkness, towards hell and the loss of the soul”. And for this he blames God.
Predictably, the story does not have a happy ending. After wandering for years in the emotional desert, Niels meets and falls in love with Gerda – a very young girl. His young wife, ‘who leaned upon him with full confidence’, returned his love, and for some years they lived happily together. A child was born from their union.
Then suddenly one morning Gerda fell ill. And as he did with Edele Lynhe, Niels sat by her bed and slowly watched her slide into the grave.
As if Gerda’s death wasn’t enough, one day after returning from the fields, Niels met his critically ill young son. No doctor was found to attend to his dying son. In despair and anger, Niels raises his clenched fist menacingly towards the sky and then falls to his knees, praying in vain to the god he despises.
After the death of his young wife and son, Niels once again drowns in melancholy. Then the war started, and Niels enlisted to make himself useful again. Then one day he was shot in the chest – a final and brutal end to a miserable life. One wonders if going to war was out of a sense of honor or deliberate suicide.
I asked myself Niels Lyhne while reading the book: “How would I describe you? It’s not that he’s an atheist. Was he also an unrepentant sadist? He doesn’t distinguish between married and single, boys and girls or children and adults. Was he an extreme a nihilist whose infidelity spells disaster not only for those he loves but for himself?
It’s hard not to love Niels’ character. He loves and despairs with great intensity. It’s also impossible not to feel sorry for him. Even the women who fall for him seem to do so out of pity. It’s like they see a suffering victim, desperately searching for a purpose in life. It is as if they understood the agony of his ruined soul, which had abandoned its faith in skepticism and surrendered itself entirely to pessimism.
Niels Lyhne is Jacobsen’s self-portrait, where the writer is at his literary best. Unfortunately, his greatest characters, a diverse group of them, mainly embody tragedy. The only life and beauty of the story is mainly in the language and its wonderful and skillful description of the riches of nature. It is as if Jacobsen raised the earth above the sky – the angels are banished and displaced by the abundance and beauty of nature.
Niels Lyhne is an outstanding achievement. Although some may not be satisfied with its central theme, it is undoubtedly a rich work, written with a unique elegance, dealing with many complexissues, forcing us to constantly observe and explore the world in which we live.
Rilke, Rainer Maria, in his book Letters to a Young Poet, praises Jacobsen’s books – “But I can tell you that even later these books go through again and again with the same amazement and that they do not lose any of their miraculous power and do not give up the incredulity with which they overwhelm a person on first reading.’
