Phony Predictions – Nostradamus and the World Trade Center
Here we go again!
Another disaster, another false prediction by the still famous sixteenth-century soothsayer Michel de Nostredame—the Nostradamus of common usage.
The computer network crashes from a “queue of four” he said he wrote in 1654. It supposedly predicted the attack on the World Trade Center towers and the start of World War III. There are several versions.
The most common is the following:
In the year of the new century and nine months.
A big one comes from the sky the king of horror.
The sky burns forty-five degree.
Fire is approaching a new big one city.
There will be a great collapse in the city of York.
Two twin brothers torn apart chaos.
Although the fortress falls large the leader surrenders.
The third great war begins then the big city returns.
Some versions add even more dramatic prophecies:
On the 11th day of the 9th month, two metal birds crash into them
Two tall statues in the new city, and the end of the world is coming soon.
Let’s ignore the fact that Nostradamus died in 1566. Think instead about more outrageous inventions designed to excite thrill-hungry web surfers.
Fortunately, there are a few Web sites—like snopes.com, hosted by Barbara Mikkelson—that scour the web to uncover hoaxes.
The 1654 hooey dates back to an essay by Neil Marshall, who studied at Brock University in Canada in the early 1990s. He composed a false quatrain and date to indicate, for example, how forgers were able to mess up the Nostradamus quatrain to cause mischief:
There will be a great thunder in the city of God.
Chaos tears the two brothers apart.
When the fort holds, the great leader gives way.
The third great war begins when the great city burns.
Nostradamus composed 942 four-line poems (quatrains) during his lifetime. He published them in small volumes of 100 books called “Centuries”. The title was a common, poetic device then about a hundred of everything—not a century.
However, his quatrains – presented as riddles using obscure words and mash-ups of ancient languages – were meant to predict the future of millennial France. The only Pacific date he ever mentioned was July 1999 for the end of the world, and that came early in his quatrain series.
Mikkelson points out that the only thing reminiscent of Nostradamus in this hoax is his second two lines lifted from Century 6 Quatrain 97. I confirm from my own collection of the original French Nostradamus quatrains that the English translations are close enough to the government’s work:
Five and 40 steps the sky burns.
A fire approaches the big new city.
Instantly a large thin flame ignites.
When someone wants to test Normans.
The second and third “predictions” of today’s hoax are a mix of 1990s precedent and new lines appropriate for the World Trade Center disaster.

Nostradamus was born in 1502 to Jewish parents at the height of the Inquisition. The family converted to Catholicism when he was nine to avoid persecution, torture or death. Thus he was brought up in the Roman Catholic faith and became a devout adherent.
As a child, Michel was a brilliant student. He was enrolled in the best schools where he received his doctorate in medicine at an early age. He built a large practice and was known for his innovative approach to patient care. For example, he refused to give blood to his patients. Drastic technology was then a popular remedy for many health problems.
Nostradamus married a young woman whose name is not recorded. She bore him two children. During the Black Death epidemic, his wife and children died. He became extremely desperate and wandered the city to earn money by playing horoscopes.
A few of his astrological predictions—generously interpreted—seemed to foretell serious events. His fame spread. Kings and popes consulted him.
He settled in Salon, France and married a wealthy widow. Their home is still a popular tourist attraction. He devoted the rest of his life to “predicting” high-net-worth clients and writing best-selling booklets.
Nostradamus died in 1566 after predicting his own death. He was buried upright in the wall of the Cordeliers church in Salon. His widow Anne erected a magnificent marble slab to his memory.
In 1700, Nostradamus’ coffin was moved to a more visible wall of the church. The chest was opened to see if it also contained a secret document. It is claimed that his skeleton had a plaque inscribed with the year 1700 on its chest.

About 30 of Nostradamus’s prophecies are most often cited as explanations for important events. These are meant to identify the three “anti-Christ” figures who are – or will – mock the world.
Will McWhorter, a neutral interpreter of the Nostradamus mysteries, identifies two of the three evil characters who might fit. The first is Napoleon—perhaps revealing a dozen out-of-context square lines. A few follow:
The emperor is born near Italy.
He will be dear to the Empire.
He is considered less a prince than a butcher.
A large group comes through Russia.
The exhausted die in the white area.
With the great efforts of the foreign forces, he is defeated.
The captured prince, conquered, is sent to Elba.
McWhortrer identifies Nostradamus as the Second Antichrist and World War II Hitler. As you can see, Hitler’s name must be changed to the Latin word Danube – but the proximity is OK in the field of prophecy:
He will tyrannize the country.
He awakens a long-dormant anger.
The German child does not obey the law.
Cries and tears, fire, blood and battle.
Hungry, wild beasts cross rivers.
The battlefield is against Hister.
Nostradamus devotees struggle with the identity of the Third Antichrist, followed by World War III. The stakes are heavy for this square:
Out of the land of Greater Arabia.
Muhammad’s strong champion is born.
He arrives in Europe wearing a blue turban.
He will be the terror of mankind.
Never more horror.
People who believe in prophecy can pay their money and make their choice.
